A sunny room on a bitterly cold day

Neither snow, nor ice, nor a wind chill of minus 10 could keep the hole-in-the-wall gang from their appointed rounds yesterday.

They installed all the sunroom windows...

...then knocked a five-foot-wide hole in my bedroom. All before lunchtime!
By the time they left for the day, the new room was sort of done, except for the stucco,
trim work, and floor (which they'll be staining to match the stained concrete in the house).

Smooch: These windows are too high. How am I supposed to watch for trespassers?
Me: Relax. You can stand on the furniture, just like always.

I'm surprised Smooch had the energy to inspect the room once the crew left.

Her new full-time job of protecting me from these strangers is wearing her out,
which is a good thing because it's so stinkin' cold, we've skipped our walk for four days in a row.
I can't remember a more miserable stretch of frigid weather. It's supposed to warm up to the forties by the weekend.
No matter what the temperature, I think I'll be finding ways to enjoy the new room.

  1. That wall that got torn up sure is thin! Maybe it's a southwest thing. If our house in the northeast had walls that thin, we might as well live outside.

  2. Carson, by Friday, we are supposed to have sunny days with temps in the mid-70's, so this weather should hit you by next week! Cheers!

  3. The little worker bees are doing a fine job. I hope you are staying warm with that big wide open window in your bedroom. I can almost smell the new wood going up in your sun room.
It will be so nice when it is done.
    Best always,

  5. It will be a wonderful place to thaw out on frigid days once it's finished!

  6. this is going to be a perfect room when it is finished, and it looks like they put french doors from your bedroom onto the sunroom, which means when weather allows you can open those doors and bring the outside into your bedroom, minus the cold/heat or bugs... can't wait to see it finished...and furnished

  7. What a wonderful addition to your house. You will enjoy this room in all weather. . . . and your hole-in-the-wall gang -- what beautiful work they do!

  8. Don't hate me. Maybe there is still time to re-do one window so that it comes down to the floor? Smooth could then lay in the sun and still keep watch. My cat and my dog battle over who gets to lay on the "dog bed" in the sun and watch the world go by.

  10. Ooh, men! Lovely sight...also love the big windows and the French doors look great!
Don't love the 10 degrees though, we are getting into two digits next week.
    Be grateful you have sunshine!

  11. Great progress! I've just got two questions: Why didn't they lower the placement of the windows so that they aligned with the top of the doors?...And how are the swallows supposed to get back to their nest in the corner? ;-)

  12. Oh, and June...I think you're looking at what left of the exterior wall (OSB and stucco) after the interior framing had been pulled out. If you look at the photo of Smooch looking at the new French doors, you can see the full width of the sill. Looks to be standard 2X6 construction.

  14. Gosh, even in this bitter cold....work is humming along great.
Poor Smooch, it's hard to have to vigilant every minute....tires a puppy out.

  15. Wonderful space. Just got to say, though, that the tiles around that window were one of my favorite parts of your house's exterior. I hope they reappear somewhere else.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

  18. How exciting to see it all unfold. I don't envy construction workers, or anyone else who has to work outside in inclement weather.

  19. Oh my goodness, I love your new windows! I bet it makes a huge difference in the way the inside of your home looks-lots more natural light! I can't wait to see the finished porch! I'm giggling thinking of the workmen checking out Wynonna and all your furry friends! I bet they go home at night and tell their families all about the lady and the pet pig! HeeHee! Hugs, Meghan

  20. It has been frigid in Phoenix as well. I can remember how cold it was the year that I lived there. Hoping you & the animals are staying as warm as possible.

  21. These guys are getting it done. Love the French doors! Have you started on your projects or ordered anything yet?
I'm picturing Smooch on the daybed with a view of inside and out. Are you going to leave the bird nest? I see Smooch checking it out.
I'm glad warmer weather is coming. -10 wind chill is no fun.
