Icing on the crate

When I showed you the puppy's repurposed crate a few weeks ago, it wasn't quite done.
The top of it needed a proper surface.

So when Ethel and I went to visit the puppy last week in Albuquerque,
we brought home some colorful Talavera tile to finish it off.

It had been years since I'd worked with Talavera tile and I'd forgotten how much fun it wasn't.

But the stuff sure is pretty and colorful and looks good even without grout.
Ethel and I must have admired the ungrouted top a dozen times before she left.

Ethel, what do you think now that I've added the grout?
Do you see the 13 tiles which are set the wrong way?
No? Keep looking.

Now do you see what I mean?
but this one is for the record books.

Despite my errors, I think the tile top
is the icing on the crate and the puppy won't notice the mistakes...

...as long as Smooch doesn't point them out.

Since I was already in tile mode, Smooch got a backsplash in her dining area.

She is a proud member of the clean-bowl club and pushes her dish against
the kitchen wall to slurp up every last morsel, hence the wall is a scratched-up mess.

I had trimmed this doorway with tile years ago...

...and decided to extend it along the baseboard.

Smooch: Eating was more fun when I could mess up the wall.

  1. I love the result of both. And the top of crate would have been boring had the tiles all been set one way. This way it gives it originality and personality: the essence of great design!

  2. I think it looks awesome! Yes after you mentioned it, I did see the difference but it doesn’t take away from the beauty of it.
    Smooch’s looks pretty, too.

  3. The tile is lovely and if you had not pointed it out...I have seen mistakes in all sorts of tile work . Unless you are a GD you won't notice. GD's get paid to notice.

  6. Your choice of tile is just perfect; goes with the pictures on the wall, too. The orientation of the tiles was not a mistake; it just shows individuality. I have a lot of Talavera tile in my house and I just love it.

  7. LOL, I think you miss your Talavera tile in the kitchen so you are now starting to spice other areas up with tile! Never would have noticed the tiles turned differently until you pointed it out. So funny...
You have inspired me. I have been wanting to do that to my dinning room table for years but could never decide which tiles to get. Wish I could go to a store to pick them out but I have to do mine by mail order. But, like I said you have inspired me!

  8. Good thing my dog can’t read blogs, she would have crate envy. The tiling error wasn’t noticeable until you pointed it out.

  9. Uh... I don't even see it after you pointed it out... In every line there are vertical and horizontal centers... Should there be a pattern I haven't recognized... Please enlighten.
    Looks pretty and cheerful!

    1. If you look at the two tiles that I've outlined in white, the green petals are at the top and bottom of the left tile; the green petals are at the left and right of the right tile.

    2. Thanks! But which one is the right one? Both variations are in every line... Geez, i must be really dim ☺️ or fung-shei challenged...

    3. I don't think either one is right or wrong - 19 are set one way and 13 are set the other way. If majority rules, then they all should be set with the green at the top and bottom.

    4. Ahh, now I get it. 😀 thanks. It looks great, anyway, and maybe even because of the unique pattern!

.. and Nope, the puppy won't mind a bit.

  11. GD = graphic designer? Just a guess. Fabulous tilework, agree with everyone that the random design is a feature, not a bug. That is the best-looking dog crate I ever saw! And Smooch's backsplash is equally gorgeous. /Gretchen

  12. I wonder if Smooch has daydreamed about how to shut the doors on the new crate? I also didn't notice a problem with the pattern either - it looks great. I think I heard once that Persian carpets often have an error woven in, because in Islamic culture it's arrogant for humans to think they can create anything that is perfect...

    Oh, very pretty!
At first, I was like, what's wrong with the tile?! Oh...oh...OH NO!!!
I wouldn't have even noticed it if you didn't point it out!
Oh well, at least it's done with lots of love! =D
