Ranch Journal ~ January 8, 2018

Cleaning tack has been on my to-do list since forever.
What a luxury it is to have the time to do the job right...

...where "right" means:
clearing a comfortable spot to do a project which might take longer than a day,
tying up the light fixture so I wouldn't give myself a concussion,
and fixing the wobbly saddle stand first in order to have a sturdy place to scrub saddles.

The sunroom proved to be a good workshop for the time being –
I could watch the boys and the birds, and Smooch could hang out on the daybed and watch me.
But then my thoughts wandered to a more permanent solution for a workshop/studio space,
and it's a wonder anything got done while I imagined enclosing the back porch
or building an addition.

I've yet to allow my thoughts to wander down the path of "will I get another equine to ride?"
It's been almost four months, but you'd never know it by the amount of tears shed
cleaning Lucy's bridle. Lord help me when I get to her saddle.

I will never say that time will heal the grief that fills your heart. It has been 10 years sense I lost my equine soul mate. I still cry at the drop of a hat when I allow myself to think about him for more than two minutes, even when it’s about the good times.

  2. Desperately hard, I'm sure. So sorry for the pain...but so thankful she had you to love her and take care of her. Tears are hard, but good. Hoping you will have special happy memories of your rides with her, even in the midst of the pain of loss. Lifting you up...m

  3. I was just wondering the same thing about you ... "... will she get another mule to ride or will it be a horse!" You said you'd never love another kitty and look what JCC has done ... he stole your heart! It will be your heart that let's you know when the time is right! Hugs from CO ... Marcia

  5. She was a dream come true. You are one brave woman wading into tending all that tack.I suspect it will also bring some peaceful moments to go with the rough ones. Cozy winter days.

  6. You once thought about working with George as a riding option and decided not to pursue. The path may have been not what you wanted, but it may have taken you there.

  8. Never forget that you gave Lucy the very best years of her life, and she knew how loved, no, beloved she was.
    Never forget that.

  9. Lucy was a jewel, as was Hank. I hope you can find room in your heart to give another jewel a good home with lots of love.

  10. I think I know how that must feel. I have to admit, it gives me a sad, empty feeling to know you aren't riding.

  11. This comment is really from Maggy but Blogger sent it to the spam folder and the only way to publish it is copy/paste:

  13. Yeah, think of all these poor critters being sold in ugly places, that you could save and which could enjoy your huge back forty! or those in refuges, looking everyday at the door in hope of a better future.

  15. Think of the good memories and think that one day you'll meet again. That's how I get through it.

Oh, about the spam box thingy, I don't know about others but all of them still show up on my computer just fine. Both the original post and the quote lol. On the other blog post and this one too.

  16. Go ahead & let it rip. A good cry or twenty is good for us. I sniffle over any of my best buddies, going back 40 years & if I don't quit, I'm bawling as if I lost them yesterday. Which, in my heart, I did. Doesn't make me feel silly -- what better memorial can they have, that they leave such a hole in somebody's life? When you're done, you'll feel more peaceful -- and have a clean saddle!

  17. I wondered how it would go, cleaning the tack and going through all the memories. Maybe Lucy's saddle remains as is--One of those saddles that you see in antique stores that still has dirt and hair and love on it?

I'm so sorry, it must be so hard. She was such a sweetie!
I hope it gets a little bit easier with time. *hugs*
