Patient condition report

George's condition has been upgraded to stable and mischievous. He's moving almost normally, doesn't seem to be in much, if any, pain, and is trying to figure out how much stuff he can break and/or play with in the infirmary pen.

Lucy's condition remains guarded. I speak with the vet every day, and we continue to adjust her treatment plan. She is still very uncomfortable as the waiting game drags on. The vet suspects that there is an abcess caused by the dryland distemper bacteria buried high up in her flank area, which will eventually surface. I've asked him if there is anything more that could be done for her at the clinic. At this point, there is not, and he told me I'm doing more for her here than they could there since I can monitor and attend to her 24/7.

My condition is what it is. We'll get through this. It could be so much worse. I think about all the equine keepers in Texas. Somebody there was probably going through the same exact thing during the hurricane and flooding. And somebody in Florida or in proximity to one of the wildfires burning in the west is understandably freaking out right now because they've got a sick equine and their farm or ranch is in imminent danger. And surely there are DACA residents with sick equines thinking, "I've got enough to worry about damnit! Don't do this to me on top of everything else!"

So I'm doing my level best to keep things in perspective, stay calm, and not mix up George's meds with Lucy's. Thank you all for your support and friendship. It means everything to me.

  1. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for both patients. You're doing all you can for them but I know the waiting game is hard to get through. Hang in there.

  2. To so many people our animals are our family and we put them first. More people need to be like that or at least like our animals and love unconditionally.

  3. Thankful that George is improved/improving. So sad Lucy is still suffering. I absolutely so understand and appreciate the anxiety, fatigue, and stress of what you are going through. Be they big, or be they small, when your fur babies are hurting/sick, the world stops spinning until they are out of danger. Of course, the suffering all around helps to keep perspective on the 'things could be worse' category, but where you are, what you are going through, and the love/worry you are feeling and experiencing is its own category of awful, and nothing/nowhere really supersedes that. These are your loves, and I will continue to send healing thoughts and prayers your way for all. Keep fighting...

  9. I've been thinking of you. If I could send something to heal them up you'd already have it. I'll just have to send warm healing thoughts. You have enough of your own burden to carry right now, stay strong for your clan. Worrying about the rest of the country is painful and probably unproductive unless you know some way to fix the world. And if you do, let me know, I'd like to join you! Tell your longears we love them.

  12. Thank you so much for the update. Happy to hear George is frisky. Lucy is progressing in her own time. She will patiently allow all your attentions. Sweet loving girl that she is. Just keep doing what you are doing. It seems to be working. Maybe a break for a margarita now and then.

  24. The key here is not to mix your meds with George's or Lucy's. Just stick to the wine and it won't be a problem.

  28. My brother has had to deal with dryland distemper a couple of times with his horse and mule, and I know you have to be patient and administer meds several times a day. He lives in an area a lot like yours, about 5 miles north of nowhere, Arizona. Hang in there.

  32. My sis and her big horse tripped and fell into a wire fence on Friday, so yes down here in Western Australia we certainly have our own health concerns, but will still keep poor Lucy and George in our thoughts, and all the people dealing with fire and flood too. xxx
