The calm before the storm

A gen-u-ine (gen-u-whine...gen-u-wine?) blizzard is forecast for New Mexico later today,
so I spent a good portion of yesterday getting ready for it.
I believe the most important part of prepping is hoping the storm misses us altogether,
which is what I shall do now.

  1. Looks like you have prepared for the blizzard for yourself and the herd. I hope you have a gas cook stove you can light with a match. You have the heat problem covered with the wood stove. Are you on a well, or rural water? You might want to fill a few empty pitchers with water if you are on a well. Strange weather we are having this year...the desert is expecting a blizzard, and eastern Oklahoma was in the sixties yesterday. We have flood and flash flood watches issued for today and the next couple of days. Take care Carson. Best wishes from the Sooner State.

  2. I've got you on my weather locations on my phone and will be keeping track of things as the hours go by. Your predicted temperatures and winds are making me want to put on a sweater when I think about you all!

  3. Impressed I am. Ye olde ounce of prevention should serve you well. Join you in hoping it's much ado about nothing. A veritable tempest in a teapot. Yours via cliches, Aunt Jean

  4. Adding my hopes to yours that the blizzard turns out to be a run-of-the-mill snow storm.

  5. Hope it passes you by. I find that if I'm well prepared for something it never happens. Keep smiling and keep warm.

  6. Ha! Loved the log tossing portion. Man, hard work being on a ranch. Seems like you are well prepared for the storm!!

  7. Crossing my fingers that the storm blows right past you!

  8. I hope the weather is not as bad as predicted or that the storm misses you altogether. I looked up the weather in your area and I was struck by one thing though, your "blizzard" forecast reads like a minor snow day at my house. I really, really do need to move.

Good luck and Merry Christmas to you.

  9. You forgot to show us the most important part...how much wine do you have on hand? =o)

  10. Over here in the land of hurricanes, we have the exact same theory about storm prep - the harder you work and the more prepared you are, the more likely it is that the storm will totally avoid you. I forget - do you have a generator? Please keep us posted :D

    1. I do have a generator...which may or may not work. The electrician is supposed to come next week to look at it. I figure if the power goes out and the well doesn't work, I can always melt snow on the woodstove for everybody to drink.

  11. I'm glad you had time to prepare, just in case. I hope you don't lose power or internet service. We lost our internet early on Christmas Eve and just had a service call to replace faulty equipment this morning. Since you work from home and need to be able to communicate, here's hoping for the best. We've had almost 3 inches of rain today in the St. Louis area with perhaps 6 more to come over the next two days. Luckily we're above freezing or we'd be snowed in already. I hope Lucy can join her herd soon. Good luck to you all. I'm loving that camera! Your still pictures are always wonderful, but action with sound sometimes lets us know more of the circumstances.

  12. You definitely seem prepared. And I too will pray that the blizzard doesn't happen. Watching you get everything ready made me think that you must be fairly strong...tossing that wood and hay around like you do. Here in Texas, I believe we hit 80 yesterday and now they're forecasting possible snow flurries tonight or tomorrow. Strange

  13. Just saw your Twitter update, yikes, sure sounds like the blizzard is hitting you alright. Despite all our good wishes, and even though your wine supply is running low!? Highly objectionable! Stay safe, everybody.

  14. Wecould hear the wind in the video! hope the blizzard won't be too strong. we saw that all creatures are kept safe. I always worry for Johnny, sorry, but this little guy is like a feather in the blizzard, I would love to think that you took inside the house for this dangerous time.

  15. Was just watching the news and they showed your area and I said "oh no, that is a lot of snow" to which my husband inquired why that worried me and I explained "the donkey lady lives there" ...to which I acknowledged that yes, I worry about people and animals I have never met thanks to the internet! Hope you are all safe and warm. Lisa G in TN

  16. Your preparations look so familiar! I loved the video and that Ranger sure comes in handy. I have nothing but a wheel barrow and up to now we have been snow free. Please don't send your blizzard this way. Hope all is well.

  17. In case you have internet and you do like Joe Cocker (in memory of him), here is a beautiful conert he gave in 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Lwg0ZlPTJA

  18. I saw the forecast before Christmas and was that areas surrounding Albuquerque were going to get hit .. and wondered if your were in the path. Sometimes there are odd micro climates that don't get the brunt of storm. I believe in good prep to ward off the worst.

The one thing you didn't show was your pantry and fridge! Hope you had time to do your weekly supply run. Smooch and you need your munchies also!

Good luck and check in when you can.

  19. It's 5:45 p.m. here and the snow may have stopped for awhile – it's hard to tell because the wind is blowing everything around. The herd is tucked into the barn and doing just fine. The power is still on, the wood stove is doing a fine job of keeping the house warm, and your comments and concern are warming my heart. Thanks, everyone!

  20. Checked the weather online and your Twitter feed ... although that was 6h ago. You've got friends all over the continent watching out for you. Too bad we haven't figured out this 'teleporting' business. We could all have zapped ourselves in to help. You coulda' had a snowed in party! Hmmm... although ... being that you live 'South of Nowhere' perhaps that kind of instant company would not be a good trend. It's still raining up here in Ontario, Canada.

    1. As long as y'all teleport some wine, come on down!

    2. I would love to see your face if the National Guard showed up at your door with a box, I mean case, of wine! =o)

  21. Can't wait for more pics or video, I love snow storms, guess because we don't get them much where I live. We've had rain, rain and more rain. Take care, keep warm, and hope your power stays on!

  22. I love to look at snow storms once a year. After that, it becomes yet another thing on my workload. Clear it, feed the animals, get the kids to school. How are you doing now? I was enjoying our freakishly warm day yesterday and I missed all this. Good luck!

  23. Perhaps your internet service is down? No posting this AM yet. We have 6 inches in Albuquerque as of Sunday so I can imagine what the rest of New Mexico is getting. Hope all is well.

    1. 15.5" so far and it just won't stop. The morning chores are done. And so am I.

    2. Good day to hunker down and ride it out. Can you close your barn right down? I just checked the Albuquerque Weather Report ... and learned to spell Albuquerque! Look out for those 8 foot snowbanks.

  24. Man, can you chuck wood! 15.5 inches is almost enough to start the snow blower around here. Hope you have enough staples, like wine and good Scotch to last the storm out.

  25. Wow! Good prep and now the snow. Thanks for the update, I have been missing your blogs! marsha@tubbslanefarm.com

  26. Hang in there (what option do you have?). We drove through on I40 a few days ago en route to AZ and are grateful to have missed this storm.

  27. You just made the evening news in Germany (at least four seconds thereof). It does look like you got a bit of snow there - I haven't seen that much snow here in the past five winters combined. I just hope all that stuff will melt without icing/freezing over. Stay upright, y'all! And get all well, Lucy!
Hmm, teleporting wine doesn't look real promising, but you have quasi-neighbors with beeeg airplanes... who could drop a case... and put it down as a training flight?

  28. Will wake up early tomorrow to make sure all is well since Im not on Twitter. God bless.

  29. Hope you and the critters are snug enough, with food and water. Sorry about the wine, though. At least you've got internet access, or you might be knitting booties for everybody just to stay sane!
