Johnny and June

The new barn cats are still holed up in the feed room, getting acclimated to their new home before I let them roam the ranch.
I haven't seen much of their personalities so it's hard to say if Johnny and June will be the right names, but that's what I'm calling them.

Johnny Cash Cat knows the hand who feeds him. He comes out of hiding and lets me pet him
whenever he hears the magical sound of cat food rattling in his bowl.

I try to engage him in play...

...but he doesn't see the point. He has more in common with Henri, le Chat Noir than Maru.

June Carter Cash Cat remains a total enigma. She never emerges from her hiding place when I'm present.
Every time I'm in the feed room, I stick my head between the feed bin and the wall to make sure she's still there.
I say hello, she stares up at me and says "you again?" and we repeat this exercise at least eight times a day.
Sometimes I stick my camera in the 6" wide space where I'd normally stick my head.
I press the shutter and hope for the best.

Even out of focus, her eyes are beautiful.

June: You again?

  10. Great names! June has amazing eyes, and is definitely a feral cat. Johnny...oh my heart! I LOVE red cats! My Aunt had one that was semi-feral. Redsy was a fantastic mouser and loved his job for twenty-two years. :)

  11. I thing the names are perfect. June may never get use to having a human around or it's going to take a very long time for her to get use to you. June's eyes are a beautiful blue and I love her coloring.

  13. June and Johnny must be hitting it off OK, and she will probably get used to you in a fair amount of time. Not pals or anything, just accustomed to your face.

    cheers,

  15. I think that Johnny looks ready for a tour du propietaire, meaning to discover your/his environment outside the barn...

  16. Your boy cat is adorable !!!

June, well she is feral and will get better with time.

At least they now both have some sort of love in their lives.

    For that, I thank you.

  23. I love the names, good choices. June's pupils are not as large as they were, perhaps she is becoming a little more relaxed?

  24. Well . . . of course I love June's name. And I love that out of focus photo. I'd enlarge it as much as I could and hang it on a wall.
Johnny looks very competent and secure. I'd bet he'll be your best friend, whether you want him to be or not, in no time.

  25. Oh, I LOVE the out-of-focus photo of June! I agree... Johnny looks ready to come out...June, er~not so much! We actually brought home a cat from the first ranch where I boarded my horses. She'd been a little girl's cat, but that family moved away. She survived on the ranch for 2 years, hiding from people and coyotes. We brought her home and she settled on the pillows of our bed! She was an older cat. We had her for 4 years. She actually died on one of our pillows right in front of us. She just let out her last breath and was gone...We never knew what she died of. We called her "Patches". She looked like June.
