Hummingbird, don't fly away, fly away

The feral beast and I had just finished our photo shoot of the vine
when who should cross our garden path but a female broad-tailed hummingbird...I think.
I'm pretty bad at the whole bird identification thing.

Whatever species...

...she sure was a beauty, and fearless, too –
I was standing about a foot away.

Hum along if you remember the Seals and Croft song from the seventies.

The sweetness of your nectar
Has drawn me like a fly
I just love you, love you, love you
I don't even know the reason why

Me: Don't even think about it.

Hummingbird: Is he fast enough to grab me out of the air?
Me: I hope not.

Hummingbird: Just one more sip and I'm out of here. No point taking chances.

  4. Wow. Cool pictures! I love hummingbirds, and we often get them in our backyard flower garden. It's hard to take pictures of them, so kudos to you Linda.

Brave little birds, indeed, and amazingly territorial. My feeder is a battleground, (imagine 'Flight of the Bumblebee' playing in the background), and it's hard to get anything done watching the competition going on. They expend so much energy trying to evict each other, and there are 8 (eight) stations on my feeder! They could be on opposite sides and perch to drink to their limits, but no. It is Mad Max out there. How lovely that you have a happy little hummer to enjoy your beautiful vine!

  29. I wonder how far they have to travel to get such yummy nectar as you have there. He might not have been afraid because he was so hungry. Gorgeous pictures.
