A makeover do-over

Back in April, I hauled out my sewing machine and gave the sunroom a makeover.

The new daybed cover has been bothering me ever since. It didn't fit snugly,
I didn't like my fabric choice, and the imperfections of my handstitched piping
bugged my perfectionist self to distraction. My makeover needed a do-over.

But first I decided to replace the mattress because it was long past its shelf life.
In my googling to locate the closest mattress store,
I found an online mattress sale at wayfair.com that included free shipping.
Buying a mattress online seemed like a ridiculous idea, but for $150,
I was willing to gamble that it would be good enough for its intended purpose.
And wouldn't a mattress delivery be an interesting way to get back at
my highly unreliable UPS man?

Smooch and I sincerely doubted that there was a 10" thick mattress stuffed into that box,
although it was very heavy and I'm sure the UPS man had as much fun lifting it as I did.

It started to expand as soon as I freed it from its vacuum pack.
All I could think of was it better work out because there's no way
I'd get it back in that box to return it.

Fast forward the 48 hours suggested by the manufacturer for full expansion.
I couldn't be more surprised by how comfortable it is. I definitely give it two thumbs up,
and Smooch would, too, if she had thumbs. I like it so much that when it goes on sale again,
I'll order a full-size version for the guest room...and really piss off the UPS man.

Anyway, with the new mattress in place, the making of a proper box cushion cover commenced.
I only wish I would have shared my plans in advance
so someone could have told me I was getting in way over my head.

You don't want to know how many hours it took to get to this moment of truth.
Would it fit?

Score!

Smooch is as excited as I am about our new cover.

It fits snugly, I love the new fabric, and if my perfectionist self
avoids looking at one particular corner, I can live with it, until I change my mind,
and let's hope that's not anytime soon. I'm sew over this sewing stuff.

  1. Thumbs up for you, for tackling that job not once, but twice! I'd never even try -- hate hate to sew and am SEW awful at it! Sunroom is much improved -- the new fabric looks great with the yellow cushions. Smooch agrees, we can tell.

  2. Having made piped edge pillows for my preschool's drawing project and various gifts over my life, piping an edge is an art that must be practiced. The resulting practice must be given away so you never have to look at your mistakes again! Your first fabric choice sort of surprised me. This one seems more like you. Not abstract. More organic!

  3. Great redo on the decorating project! And a big THUMBS UP for Memory Foam. :) :)
I still have my 1999 Tempur Pedic. It was advertised as a 20yr mattress and I intend to test that little promotional come-on.
Its fairly soft in the summer and quite a bit firmer in the winter until body heat softens it up.

I see a pillow in the original mattress cover fabric. Hopefully you are able to re-use the first-try fabric.
I kind of like it, though I think it works better on a smaller pillow than the larger mattress.

What happens to the old mattress?

  4. I love your new fabric choice, beautiful sewing.

Two, or maybe even three years ago we purchased a queen sized foam mattress from Costco. It came small and opened up large - as did yours. We love that mattress, and even today it is as great as it was the first day. BTW, there iss absolutely no odor of plastic or chemical with this foam mattress (my biggest fear).

  6. Way to go! The only thing that's more difficult than the project is the realization that it isn't right. Good for you for doing it over! It looks great!

  7. Love the new cover and mattress! I've always been a fan of flowers and amoeba's. The old mattress could be a dog bed for Smooch?

    1. It was so almost, not quite, paisley, I'm glad to see your phrase "flowers and amoebas."

  10. The perils of the DIY perfectionist....I look around at the house I built, and all I see are the mistakes. It is so much easier to be forgiving of others:)

  11. Looks great! And kudos to the delivery man who braved the road to 7MSN. Looks like you have a fall back occupation just in case ranching gets old.

    1. The UPS man can't be bothered to drive all the way back here - I have to go looking for them at one of two places in Mountainair and I never know which one.

  13. The floral is much nicer - it compliments Smooch's fur tone in a more flattering light. ;-)

Love it! Your talents are endless it seems. But I need to know, did UPS actually deliver that to your door??

    1. Ha! I wish! My UPS packages sometimes get delivered to the hardware store in Mountainair, and other times to a dropbox at a guy's ranch out on the highway. I never know where to find them.

  18. Outstanding work. What imperfections? Not a single one and the fabric choice is lovely. I need you around if I have to pick fabrics. Yayyy!

  21. Oh yes, liking that new fabric pattern much better. Must say I'm no perfectionist so the edges on the last one wouldn't have bugged me like they did you, but the square pattern would have. :)

  22. I must say I like the flower pattern better than the geometric pattern. Your talents are endless.
It look so inviting, especially with Smooch in the middle.

  23. Good job, much better fit and I like the flowers. Where did you get the fabrics? Good contrast to Smooch too!
