Down the road with Smooch ~ October 2014

It's official – the grass this year is taller than Smooch.

Walking around the fenceline is challenging. The path has all but disappeared.

We tread lightly, always on the lookout for snakes...

...or whatever else might be hiding in the grass...

...like a couple of masked banditos.

I find walking to be very relaxing. Smooch, not so much.

She's the designated pathfinder, another job that she takes much too seriously.

 Junior!
Maybe, maybe not. We were too far away to be certain.

Then we ran into a cow.

 Smooch is so over cows.

Then we found an entire bird wing in the middle of the road.
Most of our walks aren't nearly as interesting. I was glad to have brought along the camera.

  2. The path is almost gone, wow... Cute banditos. I bet it was Junior, just checking on you and letting you know he was good and with friends. Did you save the feathers? Cool!

    1. Of course I saved the feathers ... so you can stick them in the feather ball when you get here.

    2. I was planning to send you a pic today...Yesterday I finished my first-ever feather ball (using the styrofoam you gave me) with baby chick feathers! I've been gathering those sweet little feathers since I got back and finally had enough. Next up: the big-chicken ball!
      :-)

  3. You didn't bring the feathers home? I collect those like you collect bones..... Do you know what kind they are?

    1. I did bring them home, Teri, but I have no idea what kind they are. Here's a link about my collection: http://www.the7msnranch.com/2014/01/up-in-feathersphere.html

  4. Feather spear. I have a question you've probably answered in the past. When i get slow here at work i'll go back and chack your prier posts but, How do the ranchers round up their cows in all that vast land? With no ear tags how do they know who's who?

    1. Jenny, all the cows are branded, and cattle guards and fences keep them more or less where they belong. The ranchers have central pens where the cows go to get water and feed, so most of the rounding up happens in those areas.

  5. I have a nice, rural dirt road for my daily walks with my canine housemate, but I would love to walk on your road and see those mountains. What kind of bird wing is that?

    1. Not sure about the bird wing. I have to consult Professor Google.

  6. Smooch isn't used to grass tickling her nose on those walks. She is not a prairie dog after all :)
    Great shots.

  7. You are a braver woman than me! I would be more like Smooch, very concerned about rattlers hiding in that tall grass. Very cool bird wing though.

  12. And you give me grief about the bugs and insects I am fascinated by. Allow me to emphasize the point that you have a dismembered body part in your hand in that last photo. :-)

  14. Cool pics and walk! I think that might be a grouse wing. Did you ever find Junior's mom?
