On the way back to normal

It's been six weeks and one day since Smooch's and my world turned temporarily upside-down and inside-out.

Smooch has thrived on having an extra person in the house, and much to my surprise, so have I.
You have no idea how happy I get when somebody besides me takes out the trash.

My surgeon told me yesterday that I can resume my normal activities, as long as they don't cause any pain.
He also said I have to keep packing the ever-shrinking hole in my gut for another two weeks –
not the news I had hoped for, but it's got to close up eventually.
Sooner or later, we'll be back to normal.

  1. Back to normal sounds so good. You will miss all your ranch hands I'm sure. Lets hope that wound closes up in a couple of weeks and this ordeal will be a distant memory. Take special care of yourself, Carson. We're all watching you!

    Best always,

  2. Somehow, we never appreciate our normal until we can't manage it. There will be incisional pain--sometimes randomly. I have had three c-sections. The last one seven years ago. Every so often, I turn funny and stretch out a bit of scar tissue that I missed a thousand other times. It goes away and I don't think about it again.

    Welcome back.

  8. I'm so happy to hear the positive progress report on your healing journey. I can only imagine how tedious it has been for you, and how difficult it has to have been to be thrown off track of your daily routine. I'm so thankful you have had devoted angels to help you in your time of need...God bless them all. I see a 'reunion' down the road for all of them to gather together on the ranch once again, only this time for cake and beverages with umbrellas! Be good...

  9. I am very happy for you. It's wonderful that you have friends who you can turn to in time of need. Although you are very independent and capable, there are some rare times where comradeship is priceless.

  14. Ditto to what everyone else has said; there's not much more that I can add except to follow your surgeon's advice and not try to overdo it, especially while you're still on the mend :)

I second the vote for gettting all the ranchsitters together for a party when it's convenient .. now, *that* would make for some wonderful blog posts (and I suspect all your animals would agree!)

Love the pic of Smooch w/ ?? sitting beside her; your sunroom window on the world around you is envious.

Take good care of yourself, and keep healing!

  18. As my best friend and I tell each other when we've been sick: "if you get back to 'normal', I won't know you!" Linda, just get back to how you were before this enforced medical leave...:-) That's the recovery we're all looking forward to. Thank you to all these wonderful ranchsitters!! P.S. I really didn't know the best way to eat a banana!

  23. Six weeks and a day, huh? Jeez- it seems like just last week that Justina answered the phone at 7MSN and I knew something was horribly wrong. Let's never do that again, ok?
I'm so happy the good (fancy-car-driving) surgeon has given you the thumbs-up for normal ranch life - this must be such a wonderful feeling for you. If you'd like, though, I'm quite sure that all your ranch sitters love you so much that we'd be willing to work out a rotation schedule so you'd never have to take out the garbage ever again... :-)

  24. Glad you are 99% of the way back to healed! Just don't over do it in your rush to throw hay bales around! I know it's fun but use a little restraint ;-)

  25. As we say at the Casa, normal is only a setting on a dryer. It's great to think that you are close to the nirvana that is your corner of the world. Great news from your surgeon. Super friends have helped you get through this medical bump in the road and we (the watchers of your life) have enjoyed their journeys and your renewed good health. Smooches from the Cuckoos

  26. That is good news! I am surprised the surgeon didn't install a zipper. It would have made things easier. :-}
