360 degrees of coyote

It was early Monday morning. I was outside enjoying the cool, wet weather
and trying to take pictures of how good everything smelled.

Smooch went on extra-high alert. Something was out there that shouldn't have been.

Hank saw whatever Smooch saw and went on alert, too.
I looked and looked but saw nothing, which was no surprise given my lack of coffee and glasses.
But it was time to get to work, so Smooch and I went in the house and I forgot all about the alert level...

...until Smooch ran to the guest room door and reminded me.

That explains it.

I didn't need my glasses to figure out where the coyote was. I just followed Smooch from window to window to window.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't close their curtains. They'd miss all the fun.

Lucy and the boys were busy grazing somewhere and unavailable to chase the coyote off the property,

but I'm certain she could feel Smooch staring a hole through her hide.

She wasn't in any particular hurry, but she was headed in the right direction.

Look very closely right between Smooch's ears and you'll see her.

Here, let me put my glasses on for you.

  1. Excellent photos, Linda! Excellent guards on the property, too :)

  2. Wow, that is one big fella. I hope the chickens were safely tucked in their house. Once they get wind of chickens well then there's trouble in the hen house. Best of luck. Can't believe those pesky donkeys are on guard duty when the time comes. They are after all security n'est-ce pas.

    Best always,

  4. I think Ms Coyote was looking for a chicken for breakfast eh! With Smooch around you must feel very safe. better than any alarm system.

  6. I'm sure that the Herd will hear about their lack of attention from those who were on duty! Good shots!

  7. "take pictures of how good everything smelled"--wish we had smellovision, huh? :)
I know you share my fear of coyotes, despite their beauty. Glad Johnny was sleeping tight in the feed room.

  8. Hmmm....you may have to add a llama to 7MSN Ranch - that's what they use up here to protect the herds and keep the coyotes away. (However, I once fosered an alpaca, and he and one of the coyotes used to lie in the field five feet apart and snooze!).

  9. Petite little western coyote! But long legs. Like the long legs that Smooch is way up on! She's right on her tippytoes there. Full alert!

  10. Smooch looks so alert, even to being on tip toes! I've never had a dog be so alert, even with the deer in the back yard. In fact our last dog, a Golden seemed to be afraid of the deer because she never could seem to see them until they were too far away to catch. Then it was "let me at 'em!"

  12. Hope Johnny is okay. We heard the coyotes near us last night and my husband went onto the deck and shot into the dirt to make a big enough bang to make them shut up and hopefully find hunting grounds less close. Besides my sheep, I worry about the fox family now as coyotes kill them too :(

  15. Smooch is an excellent guard dog. My dog barks at birds so much, she's become a bit like the boy who cried wolf.

I do like coyotes, so cool and sleek. That doesn't mean I'd want them anywhere near my animals - although I'm pretty sure any one of your chickens could take him. *wink*

  16. Wholly Guacamole! That is one huge coyote. Makes ours out here in California look like starved puppies.

  17. I went for walk the other day and a rabbit run out in front of me. Right behind it was a coyote. As soon as it saw me it skidded and turned around and ran in the other direction.

  18. Coyotes are pretty in their own way, but everything about them creeps me out. Seems odd it would come so close to the house in daylight. Smooch is the best!

  19. We live in a rural area but in a subdivision outside the city limits. Our home backs up to the woods and pasture. We hear the coyotes all the time outside but have never seen one on our property. My Layla will race around the pool when the coyotes are howling...as if she's securing the perimeter. I don't stay out too long once we hear them though...not sure what a German Shepherd and a coyote would do if they met face to face? Great pics as always!

  20. Wow, it's like Shane -- a mysterious stranger visits the homesteaders. "Just passing through, folks."

  21. Great photos! We just heard on the radio today a warning going out to keep your pets inside if you live in Windemere, FL because they have had coyotes visiting.
    Really enjoying your blog. :)

  22. I found a Basenji picture that really reminds me of Smooch :)

She may not have the curly tail, but she certainly has enough of the characteristics.
