Honey boo-boo

Me: Honey, show the folks at home your boo-boo.

Smooch: How I am I supposed to do that? It's all wrapped up.

How she did it shall forever remain a mystery, but Smooch managed to fracture the nail on her dew claw
yesterday morning. I suspect it might have been hole-digging related.
I went outside to feed lunch and found her lick-lick-licking her paw. The nail was broken at the base and barely hanging on.
There was no blood – yet. This wasn't my first broken dew claw, and I knew what was coming.
It was only a matter of time before she knocked it on something and blood would spurt all over the place.
I thought it prudent to take her to the vet before we got to that point, and before the lick-lick-licking drove me nuts.

The vet pulled out the nail, stopped the bleeding, and bandaged Smooch up.
It was one of those procedures they do "in the back," and this time I'm glad I wasn't there to supervise.
Hearing her yelping was enough to send me over the edge. She's supposed to keep the bandage on for five days.

Smooch: If they expect me to wear it for that long, they could have at least used something more colorful.

  4. Get well soon Smooch. I'm thinking that a bowl of ice cream will make it feel better.

  6. Tell Smooch that vet wrap comes in MANY beautiful colors a girl would be proud to wear@

And tell her at least she doesn't have to wear the cone of shame like some of the pups I know (and live with). ;)

  8. Oh, Smooch! You're quit right. Vet wrap comes in lots of lovely colors that would be much more fashionable. That bandage is like adding insult to injury. Look pathetic for more treats. Treats aid healing. Tell your mom.

  9. Oh, poor Smooch! It's an epidemic! My Corgi-girl ripped out one of her toe nails a few weeks ago. We were on vacation and the pet sitter had to take her to the vet. There was much blood, she said! http://darbysdaily.blogspot.com/2013/06/nooooo-please-not-cone-of-shame.html

  11. Poor Smooch. And poor Mom having to hear the cries!!! I suppose just doing the job was better than shots to numb it and then pull it! I remember when my daughter (then 5, 38 years ago!) cut her head thanks to a neighbor boy pulling her braid then releasing it in time for her to bang into iron stairs. The ER dr. said she needed 1 stitch, and that extra shots to numb it would feel worse. He just stitched without numbing - she squeezed my hand and screamed, but didn't move! Our brave little girls!

  13. Awww, poor Carson and poor Smooch! I think a margarita and some ice cream are in order so the two of you will heal fast! (Been there also, with the dew claw and the yelps and the edge...)

  14. Poor Smooch - I remember when that happened to my Granddog. She came home with lovely purple vetwrap, and later (because it was the rainy season, something you don't have to worry about it seems) got some purple balloon-type thing to go over her bandage to keep it dry on her walks. A plain white bandage - what kind of vet does THAT to a fancy-pantsy girl like you???

  16. Listen, Smooch. Don't give up limping or tiny whines, even when you feel better. If you stop, the ice cream stops too. Keep that in mind.

  17. Ahhh....poor baby. I agree, however, that she should have a colorful bandage! :-)

  18. You know that had to hurt!

In my breed, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the breeders remove the dew claws at birth for just this reason. With the stubby legs of a corgi, the dew claw takes a lot of abuse so it gets removed to prevent future issues.

    I hope Smooch recovers quickly!

  19. I'm sorry she hurt her paw.
They really should have used that colored tape they use on my cats. Maybe you could get some colored duct tape to add to it. Blue or purple perhaps.

  20. Poor Smooch! You could buy baby socks and use one of them to make her bandage more stylish, but then she might gnaw at it.
Our "baby" dog was spayed yesterday. She was whining loudly when she heard my voice when it came time to go home.
