Rise and shine!

To this day, I have very vivid childhood memories of my mom waking me up to go to school.

She would come into the room I shared with my sister...

...and flip the switch to turn on the megawatt overhead light...

...and in her bright and shiny perky voice exclaim, "Rise and shine!"

Then I would bury myself deeper under the covers and vow that when I grew up I would never live in a bedroom with an overhead light.

"Rise and shine, George!" I said perkily as I turned on the overhead light in the barn.
It's official. I've become my mother.

  2. Yes unfortunately we all turn into our mothers.
I love how George stuck his tongue out at you. We would've loved to have done that to our mothers but were too frightened of the consequences. This was hilarious.

  3. I have said the same thing lately, about turning into my mother. It's so true!

    (RIP, Mom. Love you!!)

  4. My Dad used to yell "everybody, up!" I hated it so much that I would make sure I was up before he would yell it. Ive never used an alarm clock for the same reason. I just put the time I want to get up in my head and I wake up at that time

  5. Your Mom's going to love this.
George looks like a baby in that first photo.

  6. Beautiful blue sky. Much nicer than a ceiling light.

  7. I'm with you and George. That's a terrible way to wake someone up. I don't remember being awoken. I either got up on my own, or my parents used a much more gentle approach. Poor George. You've captured his lack of enthusiasm perfectly.

  8. I bet your Mom has a huge smile on her face. So funny our memories of childhood.
George is the perfect sleepyhead to rouse from his slumber. The tongue stuck out is perfection.
The grands said that they too dislike the "morning, glory" that greets them along with the megawatt light.....and so it goes....passing the baton of torture.

  11. Oh good heavens, you get up entirely too early. I snarl if you do that to me. And that stupid overhead light. And those people who say to me as I go to bed at 10 in order to drag out at
6, why going to bed so early?

  12. We had the same mother!!! My sister and I shared a double bed even when I was in high school. The "rise and shine!" and overhead light would morph into our large German Shepherd jumping in the bed on top of us at her instigation if we didn't make the first round. I remember one day her final torture was to roll several cold citrus fruits under the covers!!!

  13. Incidentally, now that I'm retired, living alone with my cat, I do NOT use the alarm! I get up when I'm ready. If, as unfortunately is the case once in a while, I have to get up for an early dr's appt, I'll set the alarm on my clock radio and make sure it's turned up loud so I won't be able to ignore it.

  14. I think we had the same mother...except mine would also break out into song while opening the bedroom curtains and flooding the room with sunlight!

  16. My grandfather used to wake ME up with a big glass of tepid water to drink down...every drop before I got out of bed. I like much more the idea of a singing mother letting in the sunshine! I think even the overhead light torture would be better than drinking 12 0z of water to greet the day!

  18. Aw...Good morning, George, and all your sleepy sweetness.
It's funny how the simplest things can bring back childhood memories. I've had many sweet and sobering "I've become my mother" moments.

  20. Perfect pics! Love his expressions.
You had to laugh all morning over him.
My mom also did the Rise and Shine saying.

  21. I detest overhead lights as well... but I don't remember my mom using them as a weapon!
Your ending comment cracked me up. I received a Birthday card from my sister one year that said something in the order of, "Isn't it amazing how every year... we grow more and more like Mom?!"
    Too true in my case!
