Just another workday distraction

It was around 1:30 Monday afternoon. I was crazy busy, screaming at the computer monitor,
like that would help stem the tide of incoming e-mails. Out of the corner of my eye,
I saw something run across the front porch.

Me: I did not see a squirrel run by with something in her cheek the size of a grapefruit.
Me #2: Yes, you did.
Me: No, I didn't. Now shut up and let me get back to work.

Ten minutes pass.

Me: I think I saw another squirrel run by, closely followed by something else.
Me #2: Grab the stinkin' camera and look out the window!

I pointed the camera out the office window and caught Mama Squirrel and Baby Squirrel resting on the fence.

Me: Awww, how special.
Me #2: They're probably on their way to the hay barn to eat twine. Don't get too attached.

Another 10 minutes go by.

I see Mama Squirrel run past my office door in the opposite direction. I race to the bedroom window to see where she's headed
and watch her walking around the base of a juniper tree.

Me: Hmm...me thinks she's moving her litter from the tree to the hay barn.
Damn bunnies must have blabbed about the free buffet.

I return to my desk and try to focus on work, but of course Mama Squirrel runs by with another baby
and I have to leap from my chair to take a picture out the window.

It was worth it.

Baby Squirrel: Wait for me!

Another 10 minutes go by and like clockwork, here comes Mama Squirrel with another baby,
carrying this one in her mouth.

Look closely and you'll see Baby's tail wrapped around the back of Mama's neck.

Mama Squirrel: Next time I'm renting a U-haul.

I walked out on the front porch and watched them scamper off to the hay barn.

Me: Guess I'll have to buy an extra load of hay.
Me #2: Maybe two. I hear they're as prolific as rabbits.
Me: Would you just shut up?

Baby Squirrel: You're both nuts. Could you pay attention to me, please?
I've been abandoned!

Me: Fear not, Little One. I'm sure your mama will be right back. Give her about 10 minutes.

Sure enough, Mama Squirrel re-appeared to take her last baby to their new home.

Me: Bye-bye! Be careful!
Me #2: Can we get back to work now?

  1. Good heavens, cuteness overload!! Glad you stopped working and started snapping pics.

How many babies did she have?

  2. hahaha I think the heat has gotten to you now...or else you have a split personality !! ( I'm gonna talk to Me # 1, squirrels make good dinner :) Jeanne in SC

  3. There's always an adventure at the 7MSN!

I see squirrels running past in my yard as well. But they are not carrying their babies, but stealing little green tomatos! Jerks!

  4. if all this was going on in my yard i would never get anything done, of course i don't get anything done because of my computer. the face the camera of the left behind baby got a loud awwwwwwwwww

  5. My squirrels eat my tulips, grapes and green pears. But, I love watching them chase eachother around the tree trunks, and hearing them cavorting on the roof. And in winter, when they're fat and furry, and it's ten degrees outside, it's nice to see wild creatures making snow trails in my back yard.

  6. The rabbits and squirrels have discovered Garden Eden! They may be cute, but I worry that they (and their droppings) might be a serious health risk to your equines who eat the hay, and even to you when you handle the hay. (Excuse my unsolicited worries!)

  7. Gosh,... I will take this distraction during the work day over annoying coworkers or a fire alarm any day eh! ;-)

  8. What an adorable catastrophe!

  9. Okay, I feel totally dumb. I didn't think there would be squirrels living there. Of course, I live in Tennessee and I don't have squirrels in my yard like other people because of my dogs.

Those little babies are just precious! I needed that this morning.

  10. As I scrolled down and saw the baby's picture, I swear I heard one of those collective Awwwwww... sounds, as if I were in a movie theater full of people.

  11. I can see that Smooch's coyote warnings will increase in the coming months. Yes they are as prolific as rabbits and mice. Someone has to feed the population.

  12. How cute are they? Very different from the squirrels here. Mama has spots and stocky looking front legs.Very healthy looking. And the babies...awww. Was Smooch going crazy?
    Thanks for sharing these.

  13. Yes, a collective Awwwwww...always so sweet to see a mother and her babies!

  14. Yep, a collective awwwwwwwww..... The baby pictures are precious.

  15. I'm not sure if this could get one bit cuter! A great big "Aaawwwwwww!" from my end of the computer.

  16. Corn. They like corn. I mean, I'm not suggesting you are going to feed them or anything, but if you happen across corn... And they grab it like its the best thing ever. Not that you would...

Oh dear. What book will you draw from for names this time?

  17. I don't think I've ever seen anything so cute in my entire life! How DO you get anything done there?

  18. so, I would never get any work done if I lived at the 7MSN! couldn't decided if I wanted to say awwwwww for the pictures or hahahaha to the dialoge.... guess I just need to say haaawwww haaawwww haaawwww (*snort*)

  19. Uhmmm Carson, has anyone ever mentioned the word schizophrenia around you (two)? Just asking! Yep very cute (awwwww)squirrels. HDJ
