If you can't stand the heat, get out from under the woodstove

I keep telling myself Daffodil will emerge from her favorite spot before she overcooks.
I hope I'm right. Some just like it hot.

These two prefer the cooler climate of the couch. Rarely are they so in sync.

  1. I once had a dog whose favorite place to lay was under the wood stove, and could never understand how he could stand to lay there. I would put my hand on the floor there and couldn't keep it there long. On the other hand, if the stove would happen to cool down too much in the night he would come and get me to load it up more. He was kind of like my built in thermostat!

  2. Our Dorothy is like your Daffodil ... we regularly find her stretched out sleeping on top of the radiator behind the front door. Your critters sure are adorable.

  3. MiMau does the same thing. She says it's what keeps her fluffy . . . like bread dough being put in a warm place to rise.

  4. Love these photos! My friend had a cat who slept under the woodstove. I don't know how cats stand it.

  5. Oh, my goodness! I know how hot those stoves can get. We had one in our cabin up by Mammoth Lakes and boy, it got the room toasty! Our black cat, Abby, does sit on top of our cable box, as it is warm up there! Aren't cats funny?

  6. I know just how Snapper feels! Isn't wood heat the best? (Well, other than all the mess of course). We burn Juniper, it smells divine and has about the highest BTUs. That's a good looking woodstove..... love the glass door. Happy Friday!

  7. Daffodil looks like she knows something those other idiots she has to share residence with have yet to figure out.

  9. Love both of those photos.
I have five cats and they all like different places to nap. I do have one that would be in the fire if she could.

  10. I can't imagine how Daffodil stands it, but obviously it works for her.
What is it about cats (my cat, too) and getting their picture taken?? So many cats look honestly ticked off that you are taking a picture. Only when they're sleeping do they look like they won't scratch your eyes out.

I noticed that too, Estella. I'm guessing the only thing Daffodil finds wrong with being under the stove is she does not have enough headroom to cross her paws without burning her ears. Great photography, as usual.

We have a sunporch that during the summer gets up to 120 degrees and my two cats love sleeping out there. Cats body temps run about 103 degrees. Too warm for me.

Maybe the tile floor stays cool enough under the stove to even out the heat for her. I am surprise Daffodil doesn't singe her whiskers or fur.

  13. What a great shot! She looks quite content... and I hear her saying that heat rises!

We used to have gas heaters in each room. Our cat liked to sleep on them 'off season' when only a pilot light was on and provided a gentle heat on top. Each fall, the first time we turned the heaters on, our poor kitty would do a 'walking on water' quick trip on and off the heater!

  14. Our cat loves incredibly hot places too. It makes more sense to remember that cats originated from northern Africa. Our 70-75 degree houses must seem like refrigerators to our kitty friends. :)

  15. Obviously Daffodil doesn't suffer from hot flashes or night sweats like....ahem...some of us do.

Lovely photos. I particularly like the first one - the lighting on Daffodil's face, the subtlety of the red kettle on the stove....beautiful!

  16. It has to be WAAAAY hot under that stove... LOL But if she's happy there then so be it. Just be aware of any odors of singed hair!

  17. They look very content. I'd like to crawl under that woodstove myself.

  18. She obviously doesn’t suffer with hot flashes! hehehe! I hope she doesn’t spontaneously combust under there. That has to be so hot. Love the tranquil shots though and of course Smootch’s crossed paws.

  19. I just realized they both have their paws crossed. Awwwwwe!!!

  20. Oh my gawd, lol. Daffodil is definitely a warm weather girl. What an adorable shot.

My poor Celine has been hiding under the bed in the spare room ever since Willow arrived. It's cool under there and I worry that her old bones are suffering from the chill. I do hope she eventually ventures out to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace again soon.

  21. My cat, that just happens to look exactly like yours, sits so close to a radiant heater on the back porch it looks like she's trying to toast her whiskers.

  22. Oh, I would crawl under there with Daffodil in a HEARTBEAT. I love it warm, too. :-)
And look, Smooch is actually content not to wrassle Snapper ... who knew such a day would come?

  23. That's where I would sit if I was a kitty.
