Three-Eyed Zebras

I decided to forgo the traditional 7MSN Easter gala this year. All the cleaning, shopping and cooking would have taken up time I could otherwise be riding Lucy. Instead, after my untraditional Sunday service, I went on a trail ride with my neighbors.

Being a holiday, I felt compelled to bring along a trail snack to make our ride festive. So I made these treats, which I call Three-Eyed Zebras.

What else would you call them? Turns out they're not the best treats to take along in your saddle bag since they get a little gooey when the weather is warm, but I gotta tell you – these things are to die for. They're the perfect combination of salty and sweet, and they're ridiculously easy to make.

Here's the recipe:
1. Buy a bag of pretzels, a bag of Hershey's Striped Kisses, and a bag of M&Ms.
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. Place pretzels on parchment paper.
4. Place one Kiss in each hole of the pretzel.
5. Bake for 5 minutes at 200 degrees.
6. Remove from oven and place one M&M on top of each Kiss.
7. Place baking sheet in refrigerator or freezer until the chocolate hardens.
8. Store in covered container in refrigerator.

The hardest thing about making these? Unwrapping the Kisses. Gets a little boring after awhile. But so worth it.

Anyway, off we went on our trail ride, with a stash of Three-Eyed Zebras in my saddle bag. This was Lucy's first adventure with the neighbor's horses, but it was like we'd all been riding together for years. Have I mentioned lately what an incredible donkey Miss Lucy is? She spooks at nothing and takes everything in stride. Here, let me show you one short video. This is the part where my young neighbor decides her horse needs a drink of water so we head over to the windmill ... where there happened to be a hundred or so cows milling around and making a lot of noise.

We hung out at the windmill for awhile, then headed to a shady spot to eat our Three-Eyed Zebras. Life just doesn't get any better than that.

  7. Ah, was wondering what a 3-eyed Zebra was. Thanks.

Yes, I think I can agree whole heartedly that Luc is an incredible donkey. I can't believe she just listened to the cattle and held her ground. Did she get a 3EZ as a reward?

  23. Carson, thank you so much for posting this recipe! I made it for a going away party we are attending. I only regret not getting more than one bag of striped hershey kisses. My husband called them "freaky-eyed zebras" haha.

    Love your blog!
