This seat is taken

It was Sunday morning. The sky was blue, the wind hadn't started to blow, and I knew the boys would be about done with their breakfast. I grabbed my camera and the new toy I had bought for them. What a great morning for a photo shoot, I thought. I'll give them their new toy and probably end up with enough blog fodder to last the entire week.

The moment I stepped into the corral, all I could do was laugh. Alan had found his own toy to play with.

Alan, bring me back my chair!

Alan ... that chair isn't stuck on your head, is it?

Simultaneously, Hank and I came to the same awful conclusion. We followed Alan to the end of the corral, powerless to prevent the trainwreck that was sure to happen.

Alan was on a mission, walking purposefully to the pipe fence. George was at his heels, ready to provide any assistance required. Alan knocked the chair leg against the gate, trying to dislodge it from his neck.

He succeeded in making a bad situation worse.

Whoa, Alan! Let me help you!
I resisted the temptation to chase after him and tried to calm him with my voice.
It didn't work.

Off he went, leading his own little parade around the fence line. He wasn't in a panic...yet...but I was starting to get real concerned. I kept telling him whoa and stop right there, little buddy and let me help you! He was having none of it. And the whole time, I kept taking pictures. Autopilot is a wonderful thing. Thoughts of how I would explain this to the vet starting racing through my mind.

Then finally, Alan came to a stop in the shade of his favorite tree. One can only imagine all the the choice words George had for him. I'll swear I heard him say "knucklehead" more than once. I walked over to Alan and reassured him that I would be able to extricate him from his predicament. Except I couldn't. I twisted the chair this way and turned it that way, and for the life of me, I couldn't get it off his head! At last I found the right combination of ears and head to chair and off it popped. (The chair, not the head.)

Alan seems to have learned his lesson that chairs are for sitting, not for wearing, but I'll be keeping it out of his reach from now on just to be sure.

Meanwhile, we never did get around to playing with the new toy, so I'll have to save that for tomorrow's post. Smooch will be keeping an eye on it until then.

  1. OK, now my sides are hurting from laughing so hard over Alan's predicament! (Sorry Alan, I couldn't help myself!)

I'm glad you were able to calm him down and help him out. I think Smooch is wanting that new toy for herself, figuring the boys can find their own fun.

  3. Well I am glad Alan is ok and didn't hurt himself, and chair came off....sorry it's not nice to laugh at other predicaments, but I couldn't help myself lol...it was too funny. I guess they are typical boys lol.

  4. I love a parade...
    They're marchin' 'em in...

What a shame that such an intricately woven burro necklace is now fated to become something far less glamorous, like a place for your butt. *sigh*

    Funniest thing I've ever seen.

  7. I'm so glad it was the chair and not his head that popped off. Good grief Alan! I can just imagine how you felt Carson.

  8. I think he was merely taking it out to sit on under his favorite tree... no need to panic mom. :)

  11. Well, Chair isn't as fun as Cone I guess. Glad he's okay, but I'm still chuckling. Looking forward to a game of Noodle!

  12. Love how the others just keep following him around. Wanting to help? or morbid curiosity! LOL.

  13. Great adventure first thing in the morning. Glad it popped off eventually. Can't imagine him standing there while you cut it off him. Hope tomorrow they find the real toy to play with and leave you some place to sit and watch the antics.

  14. Oh my goodness, if that wasn't funny (and scary at the same time)! Look at it this way, he's super desensitized to all sorts of stuff. If he were a riding horse, he'd be the best kind!

Glad you didn't have to 'splain nothing to the vet!

  15. I'm sure it gave you quite the panic but not enough to stop taking pics! Thanks for the morning chuckle.

  16. This is just too hilarious! It reminded me of one time when one of our calves got his head stuck in a pail! Your animals have so much character!

  17. ROFL! Don't feel bad, my kids play with the box instead of the toy too.

Now we know where the comfort tree is. :)

  18. Oh my - It was like I was standing walking next to you through this whole story. I can SO see this happening - I was nervous for each next caption...fearing he was going to start to panic.
I'm so happy (and a bit surprised) that he actually stood still and let you fuss around trying to get it off. Phew!!

  19. All along I was thinking the chair was the new toy... then I thought, no you wouldn't have given him a chair to play with.

Thank heavens you got it off without too much trouble.

That parade on animals following him was priceless!

I do hope they like their new toy!

  23. This is becoming like watching the Little Rascals. I think it is funny that you are running along rescuing but also priorities first--taking pictures.
I am starting to get real worry about where they could get this new toy stuck.

  24. That is hilarious!! Poor Alan, hope he wasn't too traumatized by the event. Those donks are so curious. :)

  25. My parents could hear me laughing from the next room and came through to see what the source of amusement was. Now they're laughing as hard as me. Sorry, Alan! :)

You know somebody's going to get repeatedly thumped by that new toy when George gets his teeth round it, don't you? Haha

  27. Well from second 1 -I knew it could NOT be too terrible an ending...it is NOT Disney...the animal does't not have to get hurt ...so yea, tears streaming down and a side ache I have!
Thanks again for sweet donkey relief!

  28. What a goofball. Glad to see he didn't get hurt though. Boy, would he have been embarrassed if you'd had to call the fire department.

  29. After the excitement of the chair, the noodle looks almost boring. Looking forward to what George and Alan will do with that!

  31. Donkeys are so different from horses. Can you imagine what would have happened if some smarty-pants yearling like my Velvet would have done that? Yikes! Love those burros!

  32. When it comes to critters, if there's a way, there's a will. I cannot believe the unintended consequences I've dealt with over the years.....perfect example in this happy ending posting.

  33. Ohmylord!

Carson... way to go! You kept everyone calm AND managed to document the entire thing.

I tell you, this is my favorite stop every morning!

  34. I remember a time while I was house sitting a menagerie of critters; and the goats in particular were a real handful! I fed them in the morning and checked on them in the mid afternoon...because they were really quiet> not good if your a goat! I found one with his whole head stuck in the feeding bin; ears and all! It was difficult to explain to the owners why their goats head was covered in Crisco shortening!! Hey it freed the goat, and it kept the flies off of his face for the rest of the summer!
