Dear Orvis, You had me at the cover.

Raise your hand if your mailbox is overflowing with mail-order catalogs. It's a good thing my mail man drives around in a big honkin' Suburban because this time of year, I'm getting about ten pounds of catalogs a day. But I'm not complaining. I love to shop as much as the next gal, just as long as the experience doesn't involve malls and parking lots and people and leaving my living room.

Yesterday's catalog roundup included the usual suspects – Eddie Bauer, Land's End, Cabela's, Land's End, Drysdale's, Land's End, B&H Photo, Land's End. Some of these guys are very persistent. The catalogs will sit in an ever-growing pile on my coffee table for a few weeks until my Christmas shopping is done and it's safe to throw them away.

But this one? This one I can't ignore. This one is following me around the house telling me to buy everything inside. And you know what? It's working.

Smooch already has a suitable dog bed, but now I'm confronted with 30-some pages of deluxe, super-duper dog beds, with names like Comfort Couch and Dog's Own Lounger and Double-High Bagel Bed. These beds have real dogs sleeping on them, convincing me that Smooch is just as deserving of a quilted microfiber dog's nest with memory foam as they are. And doesn't every dog deserve to have her name embroidered on her bed?

Count me among the demographic that indulges the needs and wants of our children pets. I will peruse the Orvis Dog Book many times over, ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the pictures from their cover dog photo contest and all the fine merchandise. And this bed here? I think this one could have Smooch's name on it come Christmas time.

  1. Oh my, I am with you. Our four pooches will spend a fortune with Orvis. Sigh.... thanks for saying what my mind is thinking.

  2. I have never heard of that magazine before! Wonder if all their covers are that good! Definitely a keeper!

I'm an online shopper, but LOVE to get the magazines, too.

  3. If you don't get a name embroidered on a dog bed, the dog's won't know which bed is theirs -- I wonder if I can teach mine to read the signs in Rally competition as well.

If I cross my fingers behind my back, I can say I'm immune to these catalogs. I can't!

  4. That's a nice bed. UNFORTUNATELY, our lab puppy destroyed the last bed we bought for our German Shepherd. Now he gets an old blanket out in the garage. It's less expensive and it keeps him warm!

  5. Ooooo...putting those dogs on the cover is dirty pool. I wonder, did you check to see whose name was on the magazine? I wonder if Smooch managed to get her good self on their mailing list.

  6. I'd pass up the super deluxe dog beds in a heartbeat for those babies on the cover.

  7. I have to raise my hand that I am an Orvis addict (and I have an overflowing mailbox)....and their covers/pics always "hook" me. :)

The only thing that keeps me from buying some of those indulgent beds for my dogs...is the fact that I have "dogs" 4 of them and that they get a wild hair every now and then and destuff anything they can.

I have bought items from Orvis...though I try to wait until they are on sale. (justification).

LOVE Smooch's new bed!! it will be so cozy, she may not want to get out of it!

  8. Oh dear. It's a good thing we got our tax refund (we always file late, just in time to spend the money at Christmas!)...

  9. Oh YES! Orvis would have had my 100 or so dollars if LLBean hadn't got them first! Creel, the new adopted retired racing Greyhound has his new XL plaid fleece covered bed/nest. It sports a LLBean leather label on the front just to remind us who, besides Orvis, really cares about people and their furrfriends.

May I say prematurely....Merry Christmas Smooch!

  10. I've never seen that catalog before! But it's enough with all the horse catalogs I get. I just bought some horse blankets for Xmas. Shhhhh!

  11. Oh yes -- the beds. In every shape and size.
Angel has "Beasley's Couch" with a distressed faux leather bolster.
Those black labs on that catalog cover --- could they be any freakin' cuter??????????

  12. What a neat picture on the cover of that catalog! I did not know they had a dog catalog, so I guess I'd better go to their site and request one. Smooch definitely deserves that bed, but bet she'll still lay on her window seat admiring the world around her.

  13. In my next life, I am going to sign up to be your dog! Or cat, or burro, or horse, or pig (which I could probably do now).

  14. I'm afraid that bed looks so good that Maggie and Murphy will definitely need one for Christmas this year. Love the black labs on the cover. My best dog ever was a black lab, they are really sweet dogs.

  15. Oh! Yes! Smooch will LOVE it! And I think that Flora will be envy...

  16. Ha ha! So true! I spend more on my animals for the holidays than I do on my family! But don't tell anyone....

  17. Smooch would look great in that bed! Yes, I try not to look at how much I actually spend annually on the kids. I may need new Wranglers, but Colt will get a set of romel reins before that happens...priorities ya know?

I bought Cowboy one of the memory foam...blah, blah, blah beds...7" high...and he loves it! And, it really did help him with his hip dysplasia too.
