Down the rabbit hole

The first time I walked the land that would become the 7MSN, I noticed a bunch of mysterious, deep holes.  Most were near the base of the largest juniper trees, but some were out in the open.  I've watched rabbits escape into them, I've watched a big tortoise climb down one...there might an entire community of critters living under the ranch that I've yet to meet.

Deets took a trip into one of the holes over the weekend.

He didn't have much to report when he emerged, though he did mumble something about taking a flashlight next time.

  1. They must be pretty big if he could turn around and come out head first. Has Deets been reading 'Alice in Wonderland' recently? Perhaps he wanted to meet the Cheshire Cat.

  2. Wow! His usually silken fur is a mess. That must have kept him cleaning for a while; I'm always amazed that a cat can stay so clean - bet you wish a horse had the ability!

  3. Hi Linda: Everybody seems to have such amazing personalities and I'm including you too for capturing all the little things the animals do. Does Wynonna the pig have a personality too? I've never really had the opportunity to be around pigs except Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog on TV. They don't really count do they? Do you have to buy special food for pigs for her or does she eat leftovers etc? Does Deets spend time around the pig too?
    I really enjoy your blog.
    Best always, Sandra

  6. I love the first one where he is looking around, almost like he's checking to see who's watching.

  7. Wow, those are big holes. It's a good thing Deets didn't meet up with someone unfriendly down there. All your critters sure do have a good time with you. :o)

  9. Ah-Ha! I know Deets......he is leading a secret life, underground. Has his command center there with communication hookups to the rest of the Network. He will be installing security at the opening of the hole now (a rattlesnake will do nicely)since you watched his entry this weekend. Can't be too careful, you know.

  10. Deets was awfully brave to venture down that hole! As I watched him go down that hole I was yelling "don't go down there!" Silly cats!

  12. Sandra, Wynonna does have quite the porcine-ality, and if she had long blonde locks, I'm sure she'd be tossing them over her shoulder just like Miss Piggy. Deets pretty much avoids her - she makes too much noise. Check out this old post for the answers to your feed questions - it's quite...special.

  13. Yee gads, Deets is quite the daring cat! I'd be afraid he'd go in one of those holes and never come out!

  14. I think Deets is mighty lucky he didn't meet up with some kind of nasty critter in there.

  16. You might want to suggest one of those miner's lights - he could strap it to his chest or something. He might also want to take a ball of yard or some bread crumbs or something.... Just in case!

  17. Awk! Like Paint Girl, I was shouting "don't do it Deets, don't do it!" :) I'm just glad he came back out! Do you ever worry about one of you animals (burros and horses) stepping in them?

  18. Paint & Pony Girls, I was saying the same thing to Deets and was tempted to grab him by the tail and yank him out. Alas, I can't always be there to protect him so I decided to let him make his own decision.

Pony Girl, I used to worry constantly about the boys stepping in the holes, to the point that I tried to find them all and fill them in. But they seem to have developed internal road maps and have managed to avoid them...so far.

  19. Pretty brave going blindly where no cat has gone before.

  20. Deet is a brave kitty!
(Linda, we used perforated (perf) metal for the panels of the courtyard wall around the front patio. It will eventually completely rust, which is the look I'm going for, but it is taking longer than I'd like! Impatient. I like it a lot, too, gives us a cozy enclosed patio, but still an open feel...
