A cow is born

When last we saw my neighbor's cow Lily, it was August. It had rained. The grass was green and lush. And Lily had an itchy nose.

Lily was hanging with the neighborhood gang of Black Angus so that she might have a calf this spring. The plan worked, and a cow was born last Sunday. My job as the stay-at-home mom in the neighborhood was to check on Lily and her newborn the next day. She made it very clear that I was not to get too close.

When Rosie caught wind of me, she also came over
to warn me not to get too close.

Don't you be gettin' too close to my boy now, ya' hear?

Hey, mama, don't you be gettin' too close either...
he's destined for the freezer.
Oh? They didn't tell you that?

So this may be the last picture you'll see of Cisco, the newborn calf. I will take heed and not get too close, for I prefer not to be on a first-name basis with any steak served up by my neighbors.

***********

Take heed, o faithful readers.  This site will be disappearing for some time next week while I fumble my way through a new layout.  I hope it only takes a day or two to get things set up, but html and I don't get along very well, so there's no telling.  We'll be back with bigger and better pictures to share...I think...I hope...I pray.

  3. Oh man. Too late! I bond instantly. I think that naming the little fellow is a bad idea, if the plan is to eat him later...

Pretty cool how protective his herd is, though. Maybe they'll be able to keep little Cisco from the freezer. Too much to hope for?

Good luck with your plans for a new layout. I'm excited to see it. I'm sure it'll be stunning and I'll feel like the retarded cousin again. Oh well....I'll miss you while you're gone.

Hugs to my (adopted) herd. :o))

  7. I had a friend that used to raise a calf to slaughter each year. She had two little girls and after the first year of emotional distress over the death of a "pet", they started naming the calf Hamburger, or Sirloin, or Ribeye. That seemed to help the kiddos keep from getting attached, but it's kind of macabre don't you think?

  8. Aw, what a cute calf! Mamas are sure protective, aren't they? I wonder why cows always stick their tongues up their noses? I see a lot of pictures of that around the blogs!
Good luck on your makeover. Are you doing it yourself? Did you do your 3-column template? If you can do that, you can do anything! I've thought of having my site redone by a professional, but then I freak out. I don't do well with change!

Calves are so cute. Maybe if his name was "Dinner" instead of Cisco it would be easier, lol.

  21. Hey Linda, you didn't let it "slip" about her calf being destined to the freezer to get even with her for giving you the tongue did you? :)

Loved those wild horse shots, such beautiful faces.....though I noticed even one of them gave your that infamous tongue! :)

Can't wait to see your new layout!
