Where have all the swallows gone?

I need to think of a new title for this annual post,
but it's the only one that seems fitting when my feathered friends disappear
to South America every September without so much as a "see you next year."

They began acting strangely on Saturday. I watched them gather in a great big
disorganized clump high above the corral, much higher than they usually hang out.
It's like they were having a meeting. Maybe they were deciding who would leave first.

In any event, by yesterday, all the swallows were gone.
Interestingly enough, the majority of the flies have now disappeared as well.

We'll only miss the swallows.

  5. Beautiful shots accompanying such an interesting annual occurrence! I’m sure they were meeting to discuss who had packed snacks for the trip. :-)

  6. Oops. Forgot to sign that comment (blogger is being dumb again and I can only post as anonymous).
Anyway, trips without snacks are no fun.

  7. Such relaxing photos...I wondered where they went, wonder why so far? We had Monarch butterflies visit from Canada on their way to Mexico. (They snacked on my butterfly bushes)

  8. I am lucky enough to have a barn full of barn swallows in the late spring and summer, and also tree swallows in my 20 bluebird houses, but they all leave around the first week of September. I miss them terribly!!

  9. I've noticed a few different kinds of birds coming through my yard lately. I'm in a fly over for migration of geese and swans as well as a lot of other birds.I love to hear the geese go over!
