Ranch Journal ~ January 2, 2018

We're now at 88 consecutive days without measurable precipitation.
It has to rain eventually, right? Until it does, we'll just have to deal with
the never-ending swarm of birds flying in for a drink of water.
They're leaving behind an epic amount of bird poop
in and around all the tubs, which means more work for me.
I'm ok with that.
"I've got time to deal with it," she said, ever so smugly.

  1. Of course the robins and bluebirds are leaving tons of poop, they’re in family TURDidae after all!

  2. I know that the birds are delighted to find a place with some water! One thing I did when the birds began to drink from the horse trough was to leave a limb or something in it that they could grab on to and climb out if they ended up in the trough.......after I fished out a couple of dead birds I figured out what was happening. Looks like yours is filled high enough to keep them safe. Enjoy the day retiree!

  3. I haven't stopped in here is a while and and it was like seeing an old friend. I will enjoy catching up and glad to see you are staying with it. I always came here because your wit, the pictures and the animals. As a 64 year old women who still rides horses every week, I especially loved your adventures on Lucy. She seemed like such a safe mount for a person that was alone out on trail. I hope a new mount is in your future or maybe it is there already and I haven't read back that far. Consider a gaited horse. Easier on the seat! Look forward to enjoying your post in the future.

  7. Fourteen robins in a row? Must keep JCC totally entertained. Happy to read of your retirement from the humdrum of everyday work/computer life. And I really like how you’ve organized your want to do lists. There is something so satisfying about striking a line through a finished project that can never be found in deleting it off the computer list. It becomes a great record of all you’ve done and gives a much greater sense of having accomplished many things. Looking forward to seeing your photo evidence of those line strikes.

  10. Lucky birds! Now all you have to do is put out some bird seed. Dry here in Nevada too and we are hoping for some snow. I hope you get some rain soon or else summer is going to be really dry and you'll have more than just birds coming to look for water.

  11. Holy cow, Bird City around there! I can think of worse visitors....

Good job with your lists of projects. I had a bundle of them too when I retired -- many are still waiting, umpteen years later. Best-laid plans & all that. The nice thing about lists is that you can, ahem, erase items as if they never existed. In their place, here, I've become a fairly learned gardener and have read a ton of history, great joy. Not to mention spent wonderful hours with my animals. Bon voyage on a journey to good stuff, Carson.

  15. The lack of precipitation is of great concern to us here in New Mexico. I fear a devastating drought in 2018. We are seeing deer here in the foothills of Albuquerque walking through yards and streets looking for water. We will see the impact on the animals and vegetation first, but our economy will be hit hard (the ski resorts income and employment already have been damaged) as if we needed more bad news. Climate change is a real and present danger.
