Saturday encore ~ In the still of the night

It's impossible to describe how quiet it is at the 7MSN, especially during the middle of the night.
But every once in awhile, something breaks the silence, and it's enough to set all your hairs on end.
I've been wanting to share the experience with you, so I've kept the video camera on the nightstand
in preparation. The video below is mostly audio, so don't be alarmed if you see a black screen.
Just imagine it's 3 a.m. ... and very dark ... 7 miles south of nowhere, New Mexico.

  2. Around here they sing in packs. I'm glad they tend to steer wide of our paddock!

  3. Interesting account of things that go bump in the night.

  4. I've always found it odd that my dogs just listen quietly to the coyotes here and don't bark at them. They reacted to hearing Smooch in the video, though.

  5. They sang in packs when we lived in Conn. too. Every night. For hours. My dogs? "What, me worry, Mom?" Not a peep. I came to like it especially in summer when we could hear the pups joining the chorus. Smooch's big bad scary bark bringing me out of a sound sleep might change my outlook, though! And I didn't have a yardful of critters to worry about, either.

  6. And here in the outskirts of the city, it's very quiet at night but not so dark. We occasionally have a coyote yipping incessantly at night. It disturbs me a lot more than it disturbs my dogs. And since it seems that my neighbors never open their windows (what's up with that?), I'm the only one who is awakened.

  8. Too funny. Of course there is the possibility that Mr. Coyote was trying to tell Smooch that HE was making too much noise...

  9. I hear the coyotes and dogs conversing here frequently. Must be closing time at the local coyote watering hole... I will take the the coyotes over the screaming of the mountain lions. It sounds like a woman screaming... If I had neighbors it would have scared me more than confuse me... from just up the road near Tijeras...

  10. You know, that's interesting. I had coyotes right next to my door when I lived in Mississippi, and they didn't sound anything like that. Less like a bark and more like howling. I find yours no so much eerie but annoying, like the neighbor's dog next door who won't stop, and I agree with Smooch, you just want to yell back: "just shut the f*** up!!"
