A January day in New Mexico

What's not to love about a January day that's dry enough and warm enough to crawl on the ground?

Hank: I've learned not to be surprised nor embarrassed by her strange behavior.

I haven't whined about the weather since Christmas week,

which might be some sort of record.

If it were in my power to send dry air and blue skies to all of you dealing with frigid temperatures and snow drifts,
you know I would. But since I can't, I will leave you with a link to an 11-second video of penguin herd dynamics.
Put down your coffee, turn up your audio, and click here.

  1. Hank never knows what's next but certainly resulted in Great photos - love the little bit of fence in the second shot. And the penguin dynamics remind me of my Mom's Assisted Living when someone drops a fork.)

  2. Every 10-years or so, Alaska gets to have a warmer January than the eastern 1/2 of the lower-48 .. so enjoy. :)

My mother and I have a little wager that this summer will be payback for the previous mild winter and very wet year we experienced in 2013. we ended up 8-plus inches over average !!

By the way, that first photo ... I thought you were sneaking up on a pole-cat :O !?!

  7. Ohhh that penguin was surely embarrassed! I shouldn't have laughed so hard, i probably look like that walking out in this cold. LOL

  8. I too thought the first photo was a cat in the grass. As the story continued I realized he was bigger than a cat. Ha! Just had to post the penguin story. I've watched it many times. Reminds me of myself on the ice rink.

  13. yes Hank looks particularly gorgeous. Love the penguins, poor boy! I've seen a French film on penguins (La Marche de l'Empereur) by Luc Jacquet, which I recommend. Since then I am in awe about these animals, what a life they have, how courageous!

  15. January in New Mexico is beautiful this year. Great pics.

We got up to 46 yesterday, much of the snow melted off. Temps are plummeting again, but will moderate in a few days. When I moved down from Cincinnati area, almost due south by about 80 miles. Mostly love that difference. They still have at least a food of the white stuff up there. Fortunately my daughter doesn't have to leave the ridgetop to get to campus for classes.

  16. Thanks for the great video - after spending much of the last two months trudging through snow and over ice, I feel one with the penguins. Love the pics of Hank.

  20. Since Tiger doesn't like hay as
much as his ladyfriend next door and the grass in the big pasture, you gave me an idea. When the camera thaws out I will show you what it's like to crawl up on him in the grass. Rockvale, TN, 2:00 p.m. 26 degrees F. and 11 degrees wind chill. Wearing his nice warm blue blankey.

  22. Love that last shot!! Has 2015 calendar written all over it!
It's hard to tell if the penguins are laughing at the one who fell or feeling bad for him. I kind of want to think they are laughing :-)
