The fly mask hall of shame

Midway through fly season and this is what I've got to show for it – six dead fly masks.
And that doesn't count those that remain missing in action in the pasture.
Some of the dead ones are torn beyond repair but I save them anyway, foolishly telling myself
that the spare parts will come in handy when I sit down to sew them all back together. Like that's ever gonna happen.

Fly masks come in one of two varieties:
the kind where the velcro is easy to rip open so the mask goes missing and becomes a trampled toy,

or the kind where the foldover closure works so well that the mesh fabric gives way before the velcro does.

There isn't a fly mask on the market today that can pass the Alan test.
If he can't remove it or rip it off George's face, he'll find a way to rearrange it.

  2. Maybe you should put the grazing muzzle on Alan. I am sure Lucy wouldn't mind making that sacrifice for the poor fly masks. ;-)

  3. Just an idea: the velcro should be between the ears at the back, not so easy to detach. you could think about a home-made one maybe?

  4. another idea: do you have another muzzle. it would prevent Alan to destroy them!

  5. Fly mask felon/fly mask wedgie - LOL! Poor George!

  6. I was thinking the same thing...put the muzzle on Alan for a while. Lucy wouldn't mind sharing. :)

  8. He is a rascal that Alan. It's quite amazing that he's figured out how to rip them off. What a guy!

    Best always,

  9. I know that you ride Lucy so I thought if you put her halter over top of the fly mask maybe he wouldn't be able to pull it off so easily. It might save you a lot of frustration not to mention beaucoup bucks because they are expensive. It might work!
    Best always, Sandra

  11. How did Alen get George's long ear through that hole without ripping the mask right off???? He's so clever.
I think you should send the pics to a bunch of Mask Companies and tell them you will be a test facility for a new Alen proof mask. That way you'd get free masks AND help the poor Georges out there that also have an Alen brother! WIn Win

  12. Isn't that what little brothers are for?

Somehow I don't see Alan wearing a muzzle - for long.

  14. Alan doesn't seem sorry at all for that wedgie. Little scamp.

  15. @Sandra - I'm not sure how Carson feels, but unless it's an absolute necessity, I would never leave a halter on an animal at pasture. They can get caught on stuff or they could get a foot caught up in the halter while trying to scratch their ear/face/etc. There are way too many equine that die each year, or are injured, due to halters left on in the pasture. Just my two cents :)

  18. what about the fly fringe you used before? not practical?

  19. You know, I know someone locally that repairs stuff like that...she has replaced the mesh in my fold-down fabic dog crate several times. If it's just the mesh, that can be replaced.

  20. I think Jenny has a great idea... See what the companies can come up with.
I am still trying to find a toy that Gretta can't chew up.

  21. All my ideas have been taken

    1) grazing muzzle for Alan
*** does Alan need a muzzle

    2) Send this and related blog post links to Fly Mask makers and request their input, advice (in the hopes of free product testing)

    3) Some kind of new toy for Alan that encourages him to use his mouth.
Perhaps velcro/staple/sew all the masks together into some sort of container --- stuff with hay (Alan's portion) and maybe that will keep him busy for a bit?

.... poor George ... does he ever get one over on Alan?

I think Jenny has the right idea. Send your pictures off to the mask company, I'm sure they'd get a kick out of it if nothing else ... but who knows?
