Riding with Turtles

By the time I unsaddled Lucy and made my way back to the pasture where we had last seen our two new friends,
at least 15 minutes had elapsed. I was not optimistic. But then again, I was looking for turtles, not rabbits.

Me: Hello, my new friend! Welcome to the 7MSN!

Maybe I should name you Grumpy Turtle.

Me: Don't be shy. I'll try to make you famous.

Grumpy Turtle: Can I have my own Facebook page?
Me: Sure. But you'd have to show up more than once a year to meet your adoring fans.
Grumpy Turtle: Let me get back to you on that.

If you have no idea what this whole turtle fixation is about,
click the word "turtles" under the "Looking for something?" column below to catch up.

  1. how cute and sweet. thinking if you would put all these animals in your top banner, you wouldn't have enough space with the chicken, the quirrels, the turtles, the birds, the lizards, the snakes... C'est l'Arche de Noe!

  3. I loved hearing you tell Steve that you love him! I often tell the various critters that we meet on walks that I love them, and I wonder what my neighbors think if they hear me.... but I really don't care what they think!

  5. So glad that the turtles have such wonderful space in the pasture. Here we have them crossing the road and they sure aren't fast enough for the speedy traffic in our area. Our community is built on swamp so they are always on the move. Great story and I guess they like it chez toi.

    Best always,

  6. AHHH!!! So cute :) Love the grumpy turtle, I would totally friend him on FB. Loved seeing Lucy's fuzzy ears too, she is such a good girl. And ditto to Bow Street Flowers - super speedy turtles out there in the desert.

  8. Does this mean you'll have 3x the visitors?! Word must be getting out in the turtle world that the 7MSN is a friendly place.

I loved hearing Lucy's "plocka, plocka, plocka" gait! Donkey hooves sound so much different than horse hooves.

  9. Well he may not be Steve, but her sure is good looking guy. He's also a sly old turtle judging by the varmit teeth marks on his back. He must be very good at playing turtle. Love him.
Heck, I'd follow him on FB or on the range anytime. We had one that looked like Grumpy turtle whose name was Justin.....just in case as a matter of fact. Oma Linda

  15. oh goodness, just had to google desert box turtle. some interesting info. guess the ones with the reddish eyes are male. the older the turtle the more faded the coloring. and they hibernate. the males can get, um, focused shall we say...on one thing...yep, mating (if females not around, then other males). so you all be careful!!! jk, i think you can handle it. then again, you most likely know all this and much more! cool critters.

  16. Aww, I'm so happy to see Steve again! It's so reassuring to know that he shows up year after year, even if you only see him once or twice.
Turtle posts are close to my heart ever since I inherited my dear Fulcrum, a western ornate box turtle who would probably love your pasture land, from a negligent cousin. Grumpy looks like he's been through a rough time lately; hopefully he and his friend find sanctuary among your herd and stick around.
