Smooch's obsession...caught on tape

Smooch's obsession began Saturday night. She smelled something on the other side of the fence
and began to dig and dig and dig some more. I feared she would dig her way out of the yard,
so I picked her up and carried her into the house, thinking she would forget about it by the next morning.

She did not.

The next morning, I barricaded both sides of the fence with rocks and the heaviest logs in the wood pile,
hoping she would give up the pursuit of whatever had possessed her.

She did not.

We join our story in progress as I finally got out the video camera.

It took another day for Smooch to stop waiting, but she finally has forgotten about whatever crawled up the downspout.
The logs and rocks remain in place for the next time.

  1. I don't doubt for one second that there is something MAJOR going on in that pipe! :) I'm with Smooch...must find the source...need the answers...must proceed.

  2. she is so beautiful and determined, a tad stubborn? we have a rain barrel. baby started digging around it and i was afraid the barrel would turn over and squish her. we put big rocks all around it to stop her digging, she rolled every rock away and kept digging. thanks for my morning laugh

  4. That sounds like a snake-in-the-pipe story to me. If the ground slopes properly, it might be time to invest in another section of downspout. You could then extend the pipe farther out in the yard outside the fence getting the end farther from smooch's nose. in the meantime, you made a neat video of a neat dog, Carson.

  6. Smooch is the face of determination. Goodness what a directed beastie she was....must be something of great import on the other side, vinegar or not.

I just can't get over how smart AND beautiful Smooch is....poor baby. I thought of the vinegar OR essential oil thing when you brought out the vinegar. I use essential oils for a number of things like stopping the puppy from chewing things to me getting a good nights sleep. Peppermint may have helped, but vinegar seemed to have worked also. Love the videos... stay warm and hugs to all

  9. I love to see a digging dog.... at your house. Such focus and determination. It looks like she almost got out. I see the snake can. Is that what it was?

There was something good in the pipe. I think I would attach another length of downspout, or block the end of the downspout with some mesh fencing. Smooch did a wonderful job letting you know there is something in the downspout or was.

  11. Sydney, my golden retriever does this too! Usually it is either a mole, mouse, ferret, or other some little furry animal. AND...her nose drips just like Smooches too! :)

Maybe should of poored the Vinegar DOWN the spout, if there was an opening at the top. Flush what ever was in there.

  12. Oh my goodness! Smooch is one determined dog with incredible focus. All I have to do to distract Willow is give her a ball or a treat.

  13. What a pitiful, frustrated pup! Poor girl!

We have a downspout in our yard that fascinates the dogs. I finally fashioned a 'cage' from hardware cloth that I put into the pipe. That has kept the critters out and lets the water out. Like you, we don't have too many leaves that can reach the gutters!

Why not run the hose in the pipe and flush out the mystery guest? Now I really want to know what's in there?!
We use straight Pinesol around the edge of our lot to keep racoons and possum out ....does work.

  17. Too freakin' funny!! And you are so clever to think of the vinegar! You usually take pics of Smooch from front on or the side.... I've never noticed all that white on top of her neck.... She's so pretty.... Love me some Smooch!
