A 70% chance of heavy rain, illustrated

The summer monsoon season has been a total bust here in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico.
So when I saw yesterday's forecast for a 70% chance of heavy rain, I got pretty darn excited.

I started watching the sky early in the afternoon as the clouds on the western horizon started to get themselves organized.

An hour later, I got the idea to take picture in the same spot throughout the afternoon as the storm developed, culminating in
a grand finale (and a blog post for today) when the heavens finally opened and flowing streams flooded the pasture.

But an hour later, my hopes started to diminish. There was that cussed blue sky again.

Then a hour after that, there was thunder and a little lightning and still a glimmer of hope for a downpour.

And at four o'clock, we got about 20 drops of rain. See? There they are on the fence rail. You can count them for yourself.

By five o'clock, the storm was moving elsewhere.

*sigh*

The bunny with no name stood with me as we watched the storm move on.

  1. Sorry about NO rain. Great cloud formation in the first image. You should have shown Alan how to do the rain dance! Have a great weekend.

  2. The clouds sure looked like rain and the changes of light were interesting. It was sweet of Alan to come check on you.
If wishes were rain... you'd be wet cause I wish it for you everyday.

  3. I think there is a name for that weather pattern...the big tease. We have sat out on the back porch to the sound of thunder and lightening waiting for "the rain" almost all month. And we have had the smell of rain, 20 drops the size of dollars and then nada. That's the name of the weather game I guess.
I am always struck by the beauty of every vista from your place.

  4. Great photo of the bunny, sorry about no rain, but bunny probably didn't want to deal with a flood anyway.

  5. I'd say you need to give that no name bunny a name. :-(

I have been watching the same weather pattern. The clouds move over the mountains, it rains and the storm moves north. We aren't getting much either. I keep hoping someone out here in the West is getting rain.

  8. I wonder if I'll ever be glad to see rain...I got over saturated with it on the "wet coast". Such lovely storm watch companions you have there.

  9. It always seemed like "monsoon" was a bit optimistic.

  10. I think you need to name that bunny. My suggestion,...Dennis (Hopper).

  11. I'm jealous at these shots & would happily swap the Scottish climate for just a few days of your sunshine!

Most of the eventing competitions have been called off coz the ground is unsafe, farmers are stuggling to get hay dried & the little that's available is gonna be excruciatingly expensive.

Oh, and the dreaded Scottish midge population is booming, so when you can get outside without waterproofs, you get eaten alive :(

  12. I like to take video of storms so I check the forecast in the Summer then set up my camera at the window in plenty of time. Just as you think something really spicy is about to kick off it all fizzles to nothing! Now I know why storm chasers turn to junk food... haha

  13. The storms around here have been mostly a hit & miss. However, a couple of nights ago we finally got a couple of good rains. Would love to have more but I think it is about done for us for now.

  14. That's how our storms have been over here. Some areas get flooded, while others only get a few sprinkles. I think you need to give bunny a name, too.
