The perfect New Mexico snowstorm

We were all a little surprised to wake up to a significant amount of snow Tuesday morning, though we shouldn't have been.
Spring in New Mexico is like that – 80 degrees one day, five inches of snow the next. It's part of the charm of living here.

I finished the morning chores, took a few pictures, then went back in the house
to drink coffee and wait for daylight so I could go back outside and take more pictures.

Smooch was not amused by the climatic turn of events.

With the grass thoroughly buried, the herd went back to grazing on cactus.

Apparently, if you scrunch up your nose just so, you can avoid getting stabbed by the stickers.

There wasn't a lick of wind, and the silence was kind of ear-y.

I'm not sure of the temperature, but I wasn't wearing gloves
and my feet didn't get cold. Who could ask for more than that?

The soft light was ever so flattering on Lucy's delicate features.

Alan: I am so freakin' sick of hearing how beautiful Lucy is.
Wanna start a snowball fight and put her in her place?

It's just not possible to take a bad picture of Hank. He's handsome under any conditions.

Am I right or am I right?

Anyway, the best thing about a New Mexico spring snowstorm is that it disappears as quickly as it arrives.

By the end of the day, 99% of the snow had melted.
The ground had been so warm and thirsty that there wasn't even any mud.

All that was left to show of the storm was snow on the mountains, growing grass, and a happy herd.

  1. Beautiful pictures of the snow and the herd. Nice that it wasn't cold and the snow was "easy come, easy go" and helps the pasture grow.

  6. Seriously? You were fretting over what to post... you got a beautiful sunrise yesterday...and today THIS! Could you fret about Wall Street and the economy today? And health care and global warming? Ha! Your blog is the first one I go to every morning. Love the pictures. Good eye!

  9. I love that peaceful feeling that you get when it snows and there is not wind....just calm. Here in Reno we've gotten just a tiny bit of precip ths winter and it will be a terrible dry summer for all the wild life. Love the pictures. Betsy

  10. Beautiful, beautiful pics. Hank is the epitome of handsome. If you look handsome up in the dictionary it says "Hank from 7MSN."

  12. I woke up to your post this morning. What a beautiful contradiction in weather possibilities. This would never happen here in Oregon!

I have heard so much about your animals from the Critter Farm girl, and I know they are beautiful. But the ones that you photographed this morning are simply gorgeous. I actually ran my fingers over Hank's likeness and pretended I was really touching him.

I am now starting my day in a New Mexico 'frame of mind'.

  13. Although I should know better, I was one of those deniers who went to the nursery on the weekend and got flowers to plant because it was so beautiful and warm for the past few weeks. The we got 7 inches of wet snow Monday night and Tuesday morning. Because it was so wet, many folks in the neighborhood lost power with a line down somewhere, and we lost cable and internet for 24 hours. I had covered the flowers and they survived with the temp only going down to 30 degrees. Last night I forgot, and with 27 degrees this morning, frozen pansies in the pot. New Mexico with its fickle Spring weather strikes again.

  15. That's what the spring storms are like here too- the snow goes away the same day. Only, we get mud because we don't have your sandy soil, we have a clay base under the topsoil.

Your quadraped children look as though they had a good time in the brief but much needed moisture. Also a treat to visit 7MSN. Oma LInda

  25. I'm beginning to wonder if we get the same kind of weird spring weather patterns here. Hot one day, snowing the next.

Those are some stunning images. I love the quiet that a fresh snowfall brings.

  30. For some funny reason, I was incredibly relieved when you showed how quickly that snow melted. I've been fantasizing about 80 degree New Mexico days...don't ask me why...
    :-)
