Down the Road with Smooch ~ November 2010

Date: November 1, 2010
Route: Clockwise around the fenceline
Distance: 1.5 miles
Time: 5ish - 6ish pm
Temperature: 55 degrees
Humidity: 39%
Wind: very
On the iPod: "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" from Oct. 30
Attire: Sneakers, shorts, tank top, long-sleeved shirt, fleece-lined vest, baseball cap...should have worn long pants.
Observations: There were many fresh piles of cow poop to hop over, but we didn't see any cows. Small flocks of little birds were flying in and out of the tall grass. If they know what's good for them, they'll stay away from my barn. A woodpecker was making a racket pounding on a fencepost. He'd better stay away, too. This time next month, we'll be walking home in the dark. And it will be cold. And we are not looking forward to it one bit. Except for the warm fires in the woodstove. And the bread baking in the oven. I really need to do a post about this bread recipe. (Read about its awesomeness at that link, or go to this link if you want the exact recipe.) Seriously, it's changing my life. If I could survive on bread and eggs, I could cut back on my trips to the grocery store by 75%.

Post processing: 1. Lightened shadows with a levels adjustment; 2. PW's Warmer action; 3. PW's Boost action; 4. MCP's High Def Sharpening action at 32%

  2. How lovely a day. I stood out in the rain for 45 minutes while Baby D ate. No rest for the Cafeteria Lady.

I, too, am not looking forward to cold, shorter day. Hurry up, Spring. We miss you already.

  6. Beautiful photos, beautiful walk. I am busy imagining having that much land.

I sure do hope you are going to give us that recipe. I went to the link and saw the process for making the bread, now I just need the proportions of the four simple ingredients. We can always eat bread.

Stay warm. We are still wearing shorts here, at least until 9 PM, when things start to get nippy.

About that bread...you got ME started on it. My first try with rye flour is waiting for the oven right now.

  8. Oops. I didn't mean to be such a tease about the bread recipe. Here's a link to it that has the measurements:

When I finally get around to writing about it, I'll include the high-altitude adjustments.

  11. I'm a total wait wait don't tell me groupie. I look forward to every plane flight when I can giggle in the seat and no one knows why.

Warm bread does make the cold weather worthwhile. Beautiful shot of the wood pecker. I'd think they'd stick to actual trees for bug finding...

  12. Gorgeous! The one thing I really hate about winter is...well, the cold, of course...and the rain...that too...but what I started out to say was, the darkness. It wears me out.

I have a No-Fail Bread recipe that I love. I just need a day to prepare it, is all. Lots of kneading and punching down and rising and kneading...etc. But, oh my goodness, yummy. I bet your house smells fantastic!

  13. fun walk, Smooch is one lucky dog to have all that wide open space to explore. Do you have any neighbors close by? I never see any other buildings in your photos. Is there anyone near to help with the animals if
    you need it?

  14. Living in Arizona, I look forward to winter! It's still in the 90's here during the day...but thankfully, the nights are finally getting cooler. Thanks for the bread recipe! I love that photo of Smooch!

  15. Lovely, as usual. But what's with threatening the birds to stay away from your barn ? That doesn't sound like you !????

  16. Sue - I do have one neighbor a mile or so down the road and we're here for each other whenever a need arises.

Gazelle - Given my chickens' propensity to eat anything that crosses their path, including small birds, I'm just trying to keep these little ones out of harm's way.

  17. Pretty...I know that fenceline! And why, in another month, will you be walking in the dark? Can't cha just start out earlier?

  18. Your chickens are attacking small birds? I know they can become cannabalistic with each other, but attacking other birds? VEEEEERy strange.

  22. Ahhh, Of course. That explains it. I should have known you wouldn't have suddenly started disliking wild birds.

I still prefer to think the bird-eating Chicken FOUND a litle dead bird though and didn't actually murder it herself.
