The garden of chicken delights

I finally found something that I can grow successfully in my garden –
happy chickens.

I let the girls out of their coop first thing in the morning, and they free range all day in this little green sanctuary, nibbling on anything and everything - the prettier and more colorful, the better.

The raised bed is their throne and the petunias their seat cushions.

Clara has a penchant for irises.

The plants against the side of the house are a veritable salad bar.

These girls do love their greens.

Here is the sacrificial Hosta on Tuesday...

And what was left of it by Friday.

Perhaps this is their revenge for the weekly pedicures.
But at least I know who I'm yelling at when I catch them destroying my flowers.

  1. My goodness they have grown, but the poor Hosta ... they sure did a number on it! The only good thing is as they munch in the garden they are also fertilizing it, and most things will come back happier and healthier.

  2. The toenails are sublime. I'd eat your plants if you did that to me.

  3. Oh my gosh! Your poor Hostas! I'd say it's the end of the line for them this year. The girls and my Pug should hook up. I believe they would become fast, Hosta-eating friends!

  4. Too bad about the hosta... :-(
But it's more fun to have those girls fiddlin' around out there than to have a hosta just sitting there growing...

  5. Ha-ha. I have matching hostas, but it's the dang rabbits that get 'em here.

    Sigh.

Will those happy hosta eating chickens be laying any eggs for you soon?

  6. I can't believe the hosta. I'm sorry, I would show those chicks a Kentucky Fried Chicken Bucket and threaten them with it.
Why do animals always pick the best plants to lay in or pee on? They walk right by the weeds straight to the good ones. I guess it is the price of having animals.

  7. Wow, poor plants!!! But the chickens are adorable! How old are they? We have a fence around our veggie garden, to keep chickens, and other animals out. Yesterday I weeded the garden and gave the weeds to the chickens - they had a hay day!

  8. Um, aren't they supposed to eat bugs and lizards? Boy, and I thought I didn't know anything about horses...

  9. Those could be pictures of my little Buff Orps. Delightful girls, tiny dinosaurs. People always ask me what chickens eat--"Anything that doesn't eat them first."

  12. What no salad dressing? Hopefully the hostas will come back for a later meal. They are cute and I want some but we aren't allowed chickens in the city. Which is good but I would have my mini donkey with me. The dogs in the neighborhood would love that.

  13. They are starting to get some individuality; the one in the middle in the last photo has a larger comb (Clara?).

  17. Wow, they really DO like hosta, don't they? I'm thinking if you have anything left that you'd like to salvage, you might need to put up some fencing!

  18. I can't get over how big they are now. Happy chicks who rule the garden. There is plenty more hosta where that came from. Flowers are overrated anyway. Thanks for the smiles.
