The Adventures of Mighty Mouse

When I dumped George's dinner into his tub on Friday, out jumped a little mouse. Cheeky little varmint, I thought, trying to bum a free meal. I thought no more of it until the next evening, when the same darned thing happened. Presumably the same mouse jumped out of George's tub as I dumped in the feed, then ran off into Wynonna's stall.

The next morning, I was outside with my camera and
wandered over to check the contents of George's feed tub.

Sure enough, there was the silly little mouse. And when I say little, I mean little.

Why he'd want to call a feed tub home made no sense to me when there are 80 bazillion safer places on the ranch, but far be it from me to understand the machinations of a mouse. One thing I was certain of was the blog fodder I could reap at his expense if I had my camera ready at dinnertime.

George patiently waited while I dumped out the mouse.

He wasn't in any particular hurry and sat there looking around for awhile...

...until he made eye contact with Deets.

Mighty Mouse did an about face and ran for the corner, with Deets in a half-hearted pursuit.

Oh dear, I thought. This is gonna get ugly and there goes the blog fodder.

For Deets, sometimes it's more about the play than the prey.
I think he wanted Mighty Mouse to come back out and be friends.

Don't give up, Deets. I'm sure he'll be back tomorrow.

  1. I really got a good chuckle over that little guy hanging around like that, and yikes, he sure is little!

George sure doesn't seem to mind him ... I thought maybe he would show more interest, but then I also thought Deets would put an end to this saga.

  2. Deets is a lover, not a fighter. I think he respects all of nature. I think . . .

That is one tiny, cute mouse!

  3. Go get'em Deets!! Hmmm, if I had one of those visiting me I would be grabbing the broom, not my camera! ;-)

  4. *Cue Tom and Jerry music* I guess it's Deets' job to catch rodents and the like but I hope the mighty mouse keeps getting away! Do you have much of a problem with vermin on the ranch?

  5. How you did this series is beyond me, 7MSN! I love it!

  6. Hmm. Maybe Deets is waiting until he's big enough to put up a little resistance. Which won't be long if he keeps getting in feed tubs...

  7. That is quite possibly the cutest mouse I have ever seen!

  8. How funny! I'm thinking though, that it makes perfect sense for MM to live in the feed bin as he will never have to wonder where his next meal is coming from. Of course the presence of Deets indicates there might be a slight flaw in this grand plan...

  9. Wow, such drama, with great action shots. I'm hoping for a sequel!

  10. How in the world did you get that quarter in there beside the mouse without him running away? Or have you already tamed him too? Mouse whisperer also? That is one cute little mouse.

  11. What a tiny fella!! Deets was probably also stunned by his size...being the owner of 2 black cats myself, I have no doubts that Deets will be on the look-out for his new friend :)

  12. There are 80 bazillion crumby reasons to live at the bottom of a feed tub!
How did you get him to sit next to the quarter?

  13. I agree, that is the cutest little mouse I have ever seen!

I kind of hope he continues to live so we can see more of him.

  14. Too funny :) Maybe he is a friendly circus mouse like in the movie Green Mile?

  15. Hmm, I don't think Deets reallly wanted to make a play date with him. He might have looked like a small snack on the run. Hope he finds a better place to live than in a feed tub.

  16. Geez, I do hope that Deets doesn't catch this tiny mouse too soon so we can continue seeing more of this similar stories...About Deets and the tiny mouse!

I happen to think baby mice are about the cutest little things!

When I was a kid, I bought a pinkie from another classmate in 3rd grade for a quarter. My bestfriend bought one, too. We kept them in my closet, feeding them milk every hour. Had then for about a week until my mother discovered them and out into the cold they went. :(

  20. I've always loved mice and that one is cute, cute, cute! Deets does look like he'd enjoy the company of a little playmate. Although, I suspect it wouldn't be as much fun for MM.

  21. I think Cricket has the right idea - since the mouse in The Green Mile had a very extended lifespan, he could have made his way to your ranch!

I'm amazed the teensy guy hasn't "drowned" when you added feed - he must be super fast!

  23. Little guy is just as likely to wind up as a snake snack as anything else. Great photo series. Thanks, and thanks to Deets for playing along so well.

  24. Go Mouse! Usually I rule for the Cat, but that mouse was the cutest little thing I've ever seen. And Deets lookes like he's more interested in a smaller adrenalin kick than an actual dinner. But please - if he catches Mighty M., tell, don't show...

  25. I once found 3 of those little ones in my feed bucket for my hens; they had jumped in to get a bite to eat OR hide? I fished 'em out just before they "popped" from eating all that cracked corn!!
I wanted to keep them but alas they puffed up and floated away :D

  26. Aww! Maybe the mouse is George's friend and they have a supper date when you've all gone to be and Mousey sleeps in the bucket til next morning?

  29. aww! too cute!

and I want to know how you got that quarter beside him and how you managed all those shots timed just perfectly!

    what a fun read!

  30. hummmm.... maybe Deets needs to come and visit Wally. I know why the mouse visits Wally, but then, a baby desert tortoise has a much smaller feed bowl to crawl into ...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Whoa ... this could get interesting over time! If Deets gets really, really hungry ...

    That thing sure was small!!

  32. Thank goodness for Twitter or else I'd be worried right about now. :) Our power was out for about four hours yesterday evening due to all of the storms up here. I'm so glad you're enjoying Deadwood!!!!!!! Whoo-Hoo!!!!!

  33. Not that it matters, but I think he may be smarter than your average mousey.
In that tub he avoids detection by snakes and Deets alike. Plus, he's got a bit of food to snack on. He's a wondermouse!

  34. What a cute little mouse! Just think he/she probably has a whole army of family hiding somewhere. :)

  35. Yes indeed, one cute and brave little Mouse person. Let's hope we have more Deets-and-Mousie stories in the future.
