The girls let loose

Are you ready for your first taste of freedom, girls?

I guess that means yes.

Not the tulips!

If you behave yourselves, we can do a little of this supervised free-ranging every day.

Clara, what's wrong?

Don't worry. He's on the other side of the window. He can't hurt you.

The girls' first taste of freedom lasted about an hour, and I was able to shoo them back into their house when it was time for me to go back into mine. Once they're fully grown, I hope to be able to let them roam around the garden all day, then close them up in their coop overnight. Snapper assures me he'll keep a close eye on them at all times.

  1. Wow, the girls have really grown, and how neat that they're getting to go out and peck around. Snapper is really zeroed in on them ... what does Smooch think?

  3. As soon as I saw "girls" in the title, I said YAY - the chickens! Happy foraging to them. You can tell them apart? I'm still trying to separate Fergus, Nigel, Ellsworth, and Bernard; I think I'll just let the chickens be "the girls"!

  5. A question for Friday's answer period. What about Deets and snakes and birds? I guess coyotes and wolves don't come around in daylight. So much for my farm knowledge.
    Best always, Sandra

  6. Perhaps they need a big, strong cockadoodling rooster of their own to keep them safe while they forage? (You'd never need an alarm clock again ever, night or day!)

  8. Pretty girls. And it will be fun to watch them grow. Now don't you need a rooster to wake you up.

  14. Oh, look how big they are already! They're so cute, in a gangley, wide-eyed kind of way. How great is that?!?

  18. Lucky chicky ladies....they will love the time outside and will pay you back with insect control. It might be a little harder to round them up as they learn the meaning of freedom. Remember to be a hawk when you guide them in...that is, spread your arms like wings and hover over them calling "chick, chick, chick"...slowly walk toward the tractor, using your best cutting horse skills!
