Spring's going to be a little late this year

On the eve of the first alleged day of spring, we had a bit of a blizzard.

As tedious as this El Niño winter has been,

I've got to think the pasture grass will soon be greener and taller than it's ever been.

It was 17 degrees at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, when Wynonna was heading back to the barn after eating her breakfast.

But in true New Mexico fashion, the sun came out and melted much of the snow, and we were all in a much better mood by dinner time.

The forecast for today is 60 and sunny. We'll take full advantage of it while it lasts. The next storm isn't supposed to get here until Wednesday.

  1. WOW, you've been socked with storm after storm! Beautiful snow pictures (ha, like you want to hear that!), but poor Wynonna trudging through the snow ... that's so sad. :o( Somehow I imagined she'd have room service at such times.

That's one thing ... if snow comes this time of year it sure isn't going to last long in most places.

  2. What a frosty burro! And poor Wynonna must be belly deep in snow! I hope Spring comes soon for you. I'm from Australia and can't imagine snow like you are getting, thanks for sharing your lovely photos :)

  3. Love that shot of Wynnona slowly trudging back to the barn.
I can hear her muttering under her breath... enough with the cold white stuff!

  4. It rained all day yesterday, then turned to snow as I was feeding last night. I haven't checked the forecast yet to see if it's going to melt off today. It's still pretty darn cold and windy out there this morning.

I'm starting to ask myself where, exactly, it is I'm living. This is crazy.

  8. Isn't it enough already? I can't believe how much it melted in one day... and another one on Wed? I think you're good! C'mon grass!

  9. Let's hope that Wednesday storm will be more rain than snow. Friday's snow was enough for me and like the animals, I want spring!!

Poor Wynnona needs a little blanket to keep her warm on cold nights and days.

  10. Winter seems to never end in some areas...nice to see the sun come out again though. Yes, it should be a good grass year I'd say!

  11. The picture of Snowy Wynonna plucked at my heartstrings too. But if you put her in a blanket as Carol Lane suggests, would she look like this????: http://www.girlofwords.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/american_pigs_in_blankets.jpg
    DON'T DO IT!

  13. Hi, I'm commenting from SW Colorado and your storm just missed us this time. We got a little snow, but mostly rain! It's so nice to see the snow actually melting away. We've had it on the ground for months now. Happy spring 2010!

  14. Shirley, Wynonna eats on the front porch – the concrete helps keep her hooves trimmed.

June, I'm sure Wynonna would love to be wrapped in a blanket of soft, flaky dough – but only if she could eat it herself.

  15. It's amazing to me that I can visit your blog day after day and still see pictures that look new to me. Loved this set! The night snow scene. Winona making her way back through the snow and then passing Deets, George and Hank. Love sharing your life just a little bit!! Thank you, Linda!

  17. That first picture is really trippy- love it! Sounds like your weather has been a little back and forth....ours has too. Always makes me nervous, that super warm then super cold weather, such instigators for colic and abscesses.
    Spring is around the corner!

  18. Wynonna is quite the chick, but I wouldn't want to see her wrapped in bread, either!!! Emma (the queen cat) was pretty ticked off when she discovered it had snowed again here on Friday!

  19. Same here at Hungry Holler Art Center in northeast Oklahoma. Two days ago I was shoveling compost into my garden beds. I was sweaty and red-faced and spring green and daffy yellow visible everywhere. Today: white, white, white, glorious deep white, almost to my knees.

  21. Are you kidding? Wednesday. I had no idea. I think I've stopped checking the weather reports because I know they'll include a 'chance of snow' and we've been very lucky in the 'chance' department this winter.

I enjoyed the photos of your place at night. It has a magical glow to it with the snow and lighting.

  23. Yikes! You are having your share of crap weather for sure. I'm done bitching about it cooling off up here in WI. It's not bad here at all. Best wishes for a spring with no more snow!

  24. I'm thinking the grass will be better this year too. Hope we're both right.

  25. You've got to be kidding me....I have to say that your weather definitely counterbalances the beautiful scenery you have. I'm a big sissy, I don't think I could handle snow mid-March!

  26. Just catching up......there are gonna be some nasty tummy aches this spring with all that grass. Grazing muzzles anyone?

  27. Wynonna comes to the house for breakfast then goes back to bed?? That's so cute! I can just imagine her yawning on the way back to her still-warm little nest in the barn :).
