Baking Wally's Cookies

To say that the weather has been inclement this week would be a gross understatement. All the rain that's been dumping on California and Arizona turned to snow when it got to the 7MSN.

All of us are quite out of sorts over the whole situation. I caught Smooch on the window seat, staring woefully out at the wild white yonder, and couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

I decided to bake her a batch of Wally's Cookies to cheer her up.

Wally belongs to Pat. If you've ever left a comment on this blog, then you know Pat, from east Tennessee. She drinks her coffee over here every morning and is usually the first commenter of the day. Last week, Wally e-mailed Smooch his favorite cookie recipe.

The cookies were very easy to make...

...and they were the highlight of Smooch's day.

Smooch gives Wally's Cookies two paws up. Here's the recipe. Oh, and look, here's Wally, too!

Wally's Cookies

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
5 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup applesauce
3/4 cup rolled oats
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup water or chicken stock
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Combine all ingredients into a thick dough. Knead until there are no lumps. Roll to about 1/2" thickness and cut into shapes. Bake at 350 for 22 minutes.

This recipe makes about three dozen cookies. When they were finished baking, I turned off the oven and left them in there about an hour to harden. The cookies freeze well, so don't let your dog convince you she has to eat all of them right away before they go bad.

  1. WOW, what a surprise this morning to see the subject of your post 'baking Wally's cookies', and then to see Wally's picture included at the end! HA!

Glad Smooch approved of them. All I need to say to Wally now is, "Do you want a cookie", and he's off to the kitchen ... no more Milk Bone's here, he turns up his nose at them. What on earth have I started!?!?!

  2. There is nothing filled with so much love as homemade cookies!

  3. What I want to know is, what's that thing over by the counter that looks like an elf wearing red sox?

  4. Looks delish Smooch! Lily thinks they could use a little peanut butter. She's partial to the stuff.

Enjoy the snow! Get out there and PLAY!

  5. Awwww. I LOVE the picture of Smooch licking his chops! Very sweet. Wally is handsome too! Thanks for sharing the recipe - and Pat for sending it! My pups love homemade cookies, and I'll be sure to make them a batch of these.

  6. Pat in East TN, Love your recipe!

I am digging this one. I was going to make cookies for us humans today, but hmmm, these look like more fun!
Love that pic of Smooch looking out the window. Perfection!

  7. At this stage in my life all I can do is enjoy other people's dogs. Thanks for a heartwarming way to start the day. I think I will make these because I have a neighbor that walks her dog daily and I know Annie would love one.

  8. Hi Pat: Just thought I would ask if you have any cookie recipes for cat treats. I'm looking for a good one that cats will eat.
I'll make these dog cookies when I'm in Texas as there are 5 dogs and 7 cats. Thanks so much. They'll like me a whole lot more with these treats.
    Best always, Sandra

  10. LOL - I love the restraining hold on Wally.

Thanks for the freeze warning, my dogs would have totally taken advantage of my gullibility.

    Thanks Pat!

  11. Love that first wistful photo. I think that you'll never have to buy milkbones again, like Pat says!

  12. Thank you for sharing the recipe... I'll do them for the dogs at our local dog shelter... Most of them will like them, I am sure:)))

  13. I would totally make them, however Savanah is allergic to grains as a lot of dogs are. I have made her cookies with potato flour before though.

  14. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who bakes their dogs and horses home made treats! Thanks for sharing the recipe. The Schnauzer boys can't wait to try them!

  15. That's awesome! The cookie part, not the snow part.

I'm going to make some of those cookies and give them to my doggy friends! They'll love me even MORE. *grin* Thanks to Wally & Smooch for sharing their good fortune.

Wally is a gorgeous fella. It sounds like he might be a teeny bit sweet on our Smooch...

(On a side note...the Winter Olympics are starting here next month and we have no snow, I repeat, no snow. Rumour has it the organizers will be trucking snow in. Maybe from New Mexico!)

  16. Love the photo of Smooch's tongue sticking out. How do you manage to get such candid shots???

My dogs like homemade cookies too. In fact, I have a whole book of recipes of just dog and cat treats.

  17. Thanks for the recipe. I don't buy commercial dog treats at all. Going to have to whip up a batch. Thank goodness these are dog cookies cause I cannot bake worth a darn! Smooch sure does look happy!

  18. Love the BW photo of Smooch - and that her cookies are shaped as cowboy boots! Could we compare cookie cutter collections later? Cookie cutters are not big at all here in Norway, but after discovering american baking blogs and internet baking shops, I'm totally hooked. But I don't have cowboy boots - yet ...

  19. Uh...after reading Leah Fry's comment, I want to know the story about the elf in the background too. <:-/

Smooch is such a handsome dog. Love the three frames of her with the curled tongue action. Hahaha.

I can't wait for the day when I will have a dog of my own. I bought some land to eventually build on and when I'm out there stomping in the woods, the dog who lives across the street comes over and helps me explore my 21 acres. I haven't met those neighbors yet and hope they don't hate me too much because she always goes home with fur full of burrs and a tummy full of treats. Dogs are so much fun. Thanks for posting the recipe!

  20. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I have to make my dog's food as he's allergic to everything on the market! I've been buying him organic treats but as you know, if it's got "organic" on it today, it just means they charge more for it. Now I can start making his treats too! Thanks Carson and Pat.

P.S. Pat, where are you in TN? We have a couple of acres in Roan Mtn. It backs up to the Cherokee National Forest. It's beautiful up there.

  21. I really should bake them and send some to my granddog and some to my 4-legged nieces, but I took the chicken way out and emailed your post URL to their moms!

I do need to find recipes for cat treats....

  26. Sweet! My two girls will love making these for our big chocolate lab! I can see the drool pouring out the sides of his mouth already!

  27. Oh thank you, thank you....I have to bake something that I'm not apt to eat (maybe). And Creel is so bored with the horrible weather (rain, rain and 35 mph winds and rain). He can't go out much and run like the wind (being a Greyhound ya know) so he lays around and expects treats. Where do you find dog bone cookie cutters though?
