Saturday Encore ~ Is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship?

This post from last October explored the burgeoning friendship between Alan and Smooch. Seemed appropriate to share it with you again today, before I introduce you to Smooch's new BFF tomorrow. Hint: her initials are JM.

Burros are rather notorious canine-haters. You can't expect an animal who chases off coyotes and wild dogs to turn the other cheek and befriend your pet pooch, though I understand that this has been known to happen. I have erred on the side of caution and have tried to keep Smooch safely segregated from George and Alan at all times.

But there's been a curious development in the herd dynamics of late. Alan has taken quite an interest in Smooch.

Alan approaches Smooch at their shared fence line and tries to engage her in play.

Smooch is happy to oblige.

Their romp along the fence line continues until George gets jealous and comes over to butt in.

So is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, it sure is fun to watch.

  1. I imagine Alan and George can sense the difference between Smooch's friendly smile and a wild canid's threat. Seems as if they've bonded quite a lot since these pictures...

  2. That is what our dog dogs with our mini donkey! Runs the fence line and they take turns instigating the play time.
    Great pics as always!

  3. This is my first visit, but I have found your comments and references all over the place. Read back through all your "parts" and found it interesting that you went to RIT. I live in Brockport and when I was teaching art, had many student teachers from RIT. A great school. I will try to catch up by reading your older posts. Sounds like you are living the dream.

  6. Smooch might fall for "JM", but Alan is there every day and I'd be willing to bet that in this case, you'll end up with the exception instead of the norm... Your animals seem to have a sixth sense and I'm pretty sure Alan knows Smooch is part of the home team. Have a great day tomorrow!

  7. I used to have BLM jennet, she was tame and gentle, she also had a love affair with my dog, they played often and were fond of each others company.
Now cats on the otherhand didn't fares so well, if you know what I mean.

  8. I love the photos! So it looks like George doesn't share Alan's affection for Smooch? Or has he softened up by now?

  10. I love Alan's furry belly in those shots. It's almost long enough to braid! (snort)
Have the two of them continued to build their friendship?
