King of What's Left of the Hill

There is a hill just north of my house. Actually, it's more of a big mound of dirt than a hill, created when the builder was leveling the land to build the house. It was a sizable hill until George and Alan came along. They like nothing better than to jockey for position at the top to get a better view of their surroundings. In the process, they've trampled, dispersed and otherwise moved the dirt around, and the once formidable hill is now barely a bump. They've given up on playing King of the Hill in favor of Digging to China.

George doesn't see China yet but thinks he's got to be getting close.

Alan decides it's his turn to dig.

He politely asks George to step aside.

Then he not so politely asks again.

Alan finally gets his turn...

...but George thinks he can do better and grabs Alan by the neck to pull him off the job.

Meanwhile, the real King of What's Left of the Hill shows up to stake his claim.

  1. Deets is always wearing the "white hat".
I did not know that donkeys dig like that. I've seen horses paw the ground, do they dig too?
    Best always, Sandra

  2. Very cute. Maybe you can hire them out to construction sites as earth movers.

  3. What a cute story! There's a horse up on the ranch and I swear he is digging to China, too!

  5. How do you get anything done? I'd sit outside all day and watch A and G if I had them.

  6. LOL - that is hilarious! And so familiar. I think George, Alan, and Deets, are the parallel lives of Rafer, Redford, and Dickens E. Wickens.

We have a similar digging thing going on, and I almost posted about it a few weeks ago! As usual, your patience and gift with the camera are perfection... loved this series!

  7. CeeCee took the words right out of my mouth! I love this place - the animals, the scenery....it evokes such peace. I'd never want to do anything (like a job!) if I were there! Apparently 7 miles from nowhere is the place to be!

  8. Well, they have to have something to do to keep from being bored. Really cute post and great photos. My first visit here, but I will be back.

  9. What a story to go along with your photos! I didn't know burros dug like that and I didn't know they treated each other that way ... I mean 'ouch' with the biting no matter where it is!

  11. Love those boys. Perhaps you are keeping this as a big surprise for us, but are they going to star in their own calendar again?

  12. They are such characters! You need to write achildrens book about them!

  13. Sandra, I can't speak for all horses, but mine don't dig.

Nancy, George and Alan were living in separate wild herds - George in California and Alan in Nevada - until the BLM captured and transported them to the holding facility in Cañon City, Colorado. They were each about a year old at the time. They met each other during their 3-week stay in Colorado and became an inseparable pair in the 10-hour trailer ride to the 7MSN.

Clair, yes, they will star in their own calendar again, and maybe a coffee table book, too.

  14. You know, I am pretty sure you could exploit those two for money, somehow. I know I would pay to see them in action!

  17. What were those donks thinkin'? The dude in black is always "the man"! He is who allows them to dig on his hill, right?

  19. I KNEW Deets would make an appearance here, some where. Those two should have their own television talk show, seriously.
