The Crown Jewel

Voila! The rattlesnake hide has been turned into a hatband. (If you're wondering what rattlesnake hide? click here.)

I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out, especially since I didn't know what I was doing. The only snakeskin hatband I had for reference was worn by one of the cowboys at the social event of the season last fall. He had wrapped the entire hide around his hat and tied it in a big knot at the back...not exactly the look I was going for.

So I googled high and low for instructions. Sadly, there is no such site as howtomakearattlesnakehatband.com. I did come across an article from a 1991 issue of American Taxidermist Magazine for how to make a snakeskin belt and faked it from there.

Now that I've got this stylin' new hatband, I think I need a really nice new hat to do it justice. And I just happen to be going on a major out-of-town shopping adventure tomorrow. We'll see how much I can do to stimulate the economy.

  1. Well, you did a great job with making the hat band from the skin. I couldn't even touch it, I'm that afraid of snakes...Enjoy your hat and have fun shopping.

  4. Boy Linda, that beautiful! I can hardly wait to see what kind of hat you wind up putting it on. There sure doesn't seem like much that stumps you, and do you think 16 years ago or so you would have been doing such a thing? LOL

No pun intended, my hat off to you!!!

  10. That looks fantastic!

When I think of all the rattle snakes my grandmother "liberated" when I was a kid in Albuquerque, she could have started a cottage industry! You totally should post a tutorial on a how-to snake skin hat band.

    It'd be great!

  11. That is fabulous!! No sense letting a perfectly dead rattlesnake go to waste. I had no idea you'd skinned it.

  20. You've done a fine job, adding another star to your cowgirl merit badge. In case you didn't find the hat for it on your shopping trip, check out Shorty Koger's in Oklahoma. Shorty's Caboy Hattery. www.shortyshattery.com. You deserve a custom cowboy hat.

  21. That looks awesome!! You did an excellent job. How did you 'sew' it? Did you use glue or stitch it with thread? Very cool.

  22. Carolynn, I attached the hide to a canvas backing with Fabric-Tac, which is a kind of glue. There's a staple connecting the ends, and there are few sewn stitches behind the loops that hold the tail in.
