Scenes from the big New Year's bash

I can remember a time back in my yuppie days when New Year's Eve was fraught with social pressures ... having a date, shopping for a new cocktail dress, getting an invitation to the right party. But you know what? No matter how handsome the date or how pretty the dress or how festive those parties were, I never had as much fun as I did this New Year's Eve.

There was one moment of angst when I thought I might be the only one at the party.

But Willie woke up long enough to wish me a happy new year.

And Wynonna poked her snout out of the straw so that I could give her a little kiss.

Deets protected me on my walk into the pasture looking for the boys.

Uh, Deets...you're barking up the wrong tree. I don't think they're in there.

There's George! The six-legged burro! No, wait. That's just Alan, hiding behind him.

Hank...don't look at me like that. This is my pasture, too, and I can come out here any time I want.

We all enjoyed a group hug at 10 pm Mountain standard time.

So far, 2009 is memorable. I can proudly say I have gone riding every single day this year. My face is a little sunburned, and that's a good thing. The weather has been just perfect ... for September.

Tonight, Smooch and I watched the sun set from the front porch and reflected upon our blessed lives.

No matter what the rest of 2009 holds for us, it has started out just right.

  3. I totally agree. A great way to celebrate a New Year in the Mountain version of Eastern Time. Because of our colds, we haven't ridden at all which is a bummer during this nice weather.

We can only take the year one day at a time, but I agree, even with our colds, it's off to a good start.

    Regards,

    Dan

  4. That sounds like perfection. I spent a quiet New Year's Eve with my furry critters too. Best way to go, in my opinion.

  6. I can relate to past New years Eve parties, but now, hanging with the critters is all I need or desire.

  7. I've been where you were in the past for some New Year's Eves. I'd rather spend them at home now I must be getting either older or smarter? Glad you got to spend the evening with your critters and Wynonna got a kiss.
Have a great year and keep on riding if the weather cooperates.

  9. I could think of no better way to spend ringing in the New Year than with family, be they two legged or four...

  10. The hugs and love that we get from our critters is simply THE best!

Been there/done that with the fancy parties/dud dates/shoes that hurt ... I'll take the quiet, secluded country life any day!

  13. Aww, that's so sweet! I love Wynonna. I'd take you up on your offer in the summer, just to spend time with her. And Smooch of course, who couldn't be prettier. What beautiful, happy animals. And who knew you had a six legged donkey?? Amazing! lol

  15. What a great relief to have a New Year's Eve with the Touchstone Animals! All that frantic reveling in years past was so exhausting, wasn't it?

Speaking from a purely practical point of view... Wasn't it kinda dark out there? How'd you find George, Alan and Hank out there in the gloom? I picture you tripping around over sagebrush, looking for photo ops...

  17. Not to worry, June. When the moonlight isn't bright enough, I take my flashlight. (I live in fear of walking into cacti.)

  20. Did you know that pigs are considered good luck on New Year's in Austria? I think that's why you're having such a nice new year so far, you gave a piggy a kiss on the right magical day.

Here are two Art Nouveau cards of women and their pigs (just to show you it's true!):

  27. We did an early countdown too, I was at a party and everyone was getting tired, so we counted down at about 10:30pm. Still felt like New Year.
