Large and in charge

To keep peace and harmony amongst the herd, I try my best to treat all my animals fairly and equally. At meal times, for example, I parcel out four piles of hay in four different places so that Hank, Lyle, George and Alan don't have to share...unless they want to.

Excuse me, Hank?

Wake up, Hank. It's time for lunch.

Oh, all right. Here!

  1. I can tell if the piles were actually, although it looks like to me someone might have got a bigger share.

  3. I have to put out an extra pile just to keep the peace - one of my fellas runs from pile to pile playing musical hay or will stand between piles to keep the mare out.

Beautiful blog...I enjoyed seeing your photos.

  4. Until now, I never realized how stunning Hank is, wow, that red and white paint contrast. I love red animals. How do you keep your horses so clean? Ours ALWAYS needed bathes. We'd wash 'em, but there they'd go, rolling in the dirt.

  5. Get OUT! Did Hank really put some hay on the ground for the boys? I LOVE that!

  6. I love the interaction between species, its one of the great things about my barn. Except there it's pigs and horses and Jack Russell terriers. And I agree, Hank is very handsome.

  7. Carolynn, he really did throw the hay out of the tub - whether he was throwing it at them or for them, only Hank knows for sure. But they all stood there happily together till it was all gone. The herd dynamics never cease to amaze me.

Joanna, my secret to having clean horses is living in the desert - no rain means no mud.

  8. Herd dynamics are something, aren't they? Isn't it cool to just sit and watch what they do sometimes?

Even cooler to have no mud :)

  14. Hank is one sweet friend to his donkey pals.

When I put hay out, I spread it everywhere in tiny piles and often they end up being in a sort of line - the horses go down the line like bumper cars. Keil Bay bumps the pony to the next pile, who bumps Cody, etc.

At some point Cody will walk way ahead to a pile so he won't keep getting bumped. :)

  15. Great catch on the hay throwing picture, Linda...you and your camera are quite amazing with your timing :) What a hilarious little trio-they just tickle me pink :)
    Squishes to the gang!

  16. Very cute, nice to see that they share. When we were looking after my sisters horses, the biggest would eat all of his hay, and then mosey on over to the little mule, and eat all of hers. Now that was definitely not sharing.

  21. All of my horses are shovelers but the minis are the worst. They will sift through whatever hay you give them for all the best parts, shovel the rest on the ground and then lay in it.

Man, I would love to be somewhere with no mud. Right now, we have freezing rain for about the 4th time in the last month. Once the ground defrosts it will be sticky mud.

  22. You know, we try to be the best mom's in the world and keep their hay dirt free...they just don't get it!!! Why does it always taste better on the ground? ;~)

Colt's favorite way to eat is straight from the wheel barrow...he follows me until I dump the last flake out...then he'll finally eat from the tires. (I use big truck tires with the sidewalls cut out...keeps most of the hay from blowing away in the Harney County wind!)

  24. I had a cat once, years ago and he would jump up on the counter when I wasn't looking and toss treats down to the dog. I caught them doing it one day and was amazed how these two banditos worked together.
    Best always, Sandra
