On the way to the hay

I always try to remember my camera when I leave to go anywhere. You just never know who you're liable to meet on the way out to the highway. On the last hayday Friday, I encountered the Border Patrol.

An odd couple to be sure, this horse and her googly-eyed bovine companion met me at the side of the road. The horse belongs to Tractor Man. She is a two-year old filly who has grown up as an only horse among a small herd of cattle. My 9-year-old neighbor has hence dubbed her Cowgirl.

Cowgirl is...well, she's just a pest. She has no manners, no fear of people, and she considers all humans vending machines. Tractor Man is, shall we say, clueless about horse training. Despite her character flaws, Cowgirl is rather cute.

And she bears a striking resemblance to another horse we all know and love, don't you think?

You're not going over there are you?

You'd better share if she gives you anything.

Sorry darlin', I don't pick up hitchhikers.

  2. haha! Great photos. My first thought was "Lyle"! And then I realized that horse was missing the telltale blaze. Clever you for superimposing it onto the filly :)

You did notice that the calf by Mama Cow's side is flipping you the 'nose tongue' right?
Why does that seem to always happen to you? hehe

The last photo cracks me up.
Looks like that pretty filly needs a month at Rancher Woman Horse Training Boot Camp!

  3. Great extended family you have there, although, the cow is a bit strange. I do like Cowgirl, even if she is a bit forthright.

  5. I've been reading your blog for a week or so now and I'm really enjoying it! I'm so impressed by your courage to follow your dreams, not to mention face rattlesnakes on your own. I love the pictures and the stories of your herd! And I definitely think you should go ahead and start working on that book! :)

  6. Twinville, I was hoping somebody would notice that calf flipping me the tongue. I'm trying not to take all this personally, but it does have me wondering.

Tara, welcome to the 7MSN. Glad you found us. Come back soon - the coffee's always on.

  8. The border patrol....HA!! And those googly-eyed bovine jsut crack me up. Even as calves, they have this quality...and those tongues...they've got a mind of their own, don't they? I wouldn't take the nose-tongue personally - maybe it was just waving at you. Those tongues kind of remind me of the critters in the movie "Tremors"... wow, that's kind of awful isn't it? But the movie *was* meant to be a comedy... :-)

  15. Yep, I have a horse like that, only with slightly better manners. But, he's very nosy - always wants to know what's going on.

    Thanks for sharing.
