Snaps vs Buttons

I prefer snaps to buttons - snaps don't fall off, get lost, or need to be sewn back on. And I really like the sound they make when you close and open them. Buttons don't make cool sounds.

The first man to design shirts with snaps, Jack Weil, died this week. He was said to be the country's oldest CEO. He was still going to work every day when he died...at the age of 107! The company he founded in 1946 is called Rockmount Ranch Wear. Many movie stars and country/western singers have worn Rockmount shirts; even Elvis wore them.

I bought this Rockmount shirt four years ago and have worn it maybe four times. I LOVE this shirt, but I loathe ironing. It is the one piece of clothing in my closet that I have not ruined by wearing in the barn to do chores...yet.

The next time I put it on and close all those snaps, I'll think of Mr. Weil and his contributions to society - chief among them, shirts that snap.

  1. OMG- I love those shirts! And did you see the riding skirts? That's my idea of "business attire", along with a nice pair of boots. I hope that the company stays the same and goes on forever even though Mr. Weil is sadly no longer on this earth. If someone gave me one of those shirts, I'd drag the iron out of the closet, hint, hint. I'll have to e-mail the link to my husband. Thanks!

  3. That's a beautiful shirt...But why would a western shirt be made that needs ironing? That seems contradictory to the cowboy way of life...who has time to iron?! :-)

  5. Farmgirl, I read this quote from Mr. Weil in one of the stories that appeared last week: "I learned fast you can't sell to cowboys; they have no money. You have to appeal to the cowboy in everyone and sell to them."

Smart man...and his wife probably did all the ironing.

Victoria, please pass along my apologies to your husband for leading you to this link.

  6. The shirts are lovely, but the skirts look like they don't need any ironing at all. That's a winner in my book! I have a feeling there's an online order in my immediate future.....Thanks for the link.

  11. Oh those shirts. I don't own one but both of my parents had many as well as my brothers. CEO and working at 107!!! Wow! I will be working until I die as well but not because I want to. I admire him.

  12. Oh no! That's a terrible loss to the world. I have them on my work jacket and I use them so much they're almost broken...much better and less fidgety than buttons...just make sure you dont think a shirt with buttons has them on it and try to pull them all open at once!!! =S
