They are maybe 4 inches wide and that makes the hens splay their feet to roost, instead of curling them around. Then their stomachs sit right on their feet so they are not exposed at night. I have dealt with comb frostbite but never had an issue on their feet, thankfully. It was messy and attracted dirt like crazy, but I think it spared them too much damage. The comb tips on two of them were rather grayish for a bit, but non broke off. We have chickens. One rooster had to come in our utility room with a frost bitten comb. He kept crowing (in the house) waking us all up very, very early in the mornings.
